A friend went up to Winter Park to ski today and in exchange for making the drive up from Denver to let her dog out this afternoon I was supposed to get dinner at The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse tonight.

The big avalanche that the national news is covering now that Colorado weather is the new trendy shark attack headline? Well, that's the road to Winter Park, where she went today. This forced her to find an alternative route back, which apparently took awhile.

Then I looked at the news online and discovered that the only route between Denver and Boulder that you don't have to be batshiat crazy to drive in the winter, US 36, has been closed due to a whole slew of accidents blamed on blowing snow and ice. The other route in, Hwy 93, is so windy that it blows your car sideways in the summer, so I shudder to think what it's like on ice, let alone on ice in the dark.

US 36 also happens to be how you get from the interstate into Boulder, so my friend and her friend with whom she drove up to Winter Park this morning are going to try 93 instead. I think they're crazy, but they're already on the road so their choices are extremely limited.

I'm stuck in Boulder for the night, no tea house dinner, and no fuzzy slippers to keep my freezing footses warm. :-(

You can borrow Karma the WonderDog for the night; she likes to sleep on feet :-)

Well, the latest update is that Kennda has finally made it home, but she apparently wiped out on the slopes badly enough for the ski patrol to haul her in for x-rays. She might have a cracked rib, but they couldn't tell for sure. But she's home now and getting cleaned up and about to take the vicodin they gave her. The roads are terrible, so I'm spending the night on the futon.

I read the news article. I'm happy to hear that you and your friend are all safe. Will there be a new thread with pics of this snow storm, or is everyone still posting on the first one from around Christmas?

Of all the places to be stuck, Boulder hardly generates sympathy.

You could be stuck somewhere like the Buffalo airport and have to sleep with about 5000 strangers.

Rebecca -- glad you're staying put! The last weather report we heard was the wind may increase overnight. Right now they are estimating them to be as high as 70 mph. We drove maybe 3 miles home from the movies and could barely see the road most of the time. Those huge drifts we've been shoveling for the last 3 weeks will all be in different places tomorrow. More snow in the forecast tomorrow night. :-P

I was stuck on a submarine for several months once. . . But that didn't really involve driving in snow. :)

Oh, wait. . . I was stuck on a small island in Alaska for two years once! Does this mean I win?!?!?!

Seriously, though. . . I'm really glad that your friends made it home ok. Winter driving can really be a bummer. (He says after spending the evening driving around with the top down on his convertible.)

Might want to have those ribs checked out a little more, though. I once broke a rib and was given Motrin for it because they thought it was just a bruise.

It's not like I was roaming the town, ya know? The last few weeks in Colorado haven't exactly been fun and games. The roads have been terrible since the first blizzard and every time we seem to be getting close to clearing them off we get slammed again. Or we clear them off and the piles of snow next to the road melt all day, the temperature drops after sunset, and once again we're driving on a sheet of ice. We're supposed to be getting more snow. Again. I'm tired of driving on ice and slush.

And I was actually stuck at DIA on 12/23, the bad day with the four hour security lines and people still sleeping in cots, and we watched ourselves on CNN all day. So been there, done that. ;-)

Petrakka: the powder is great, if you can get to it. Berthoud Pass - the main drag up to the town and resort - was closed for most of the day yesterday thanks to a category 4 avalanche that pushed two cars off the road and down the side of the mountain. (BTW, I lived in C-U for ten years before I moved out here. Howdy!)

Sounds like a typical winter in Michigan.

You're inside. You probably have heat. You have TV. You have a futon to sleep on. You're not sleeping on the floor at an airport. Seems to be pretty cushy from what I can tell.

Hi Karmabreeze Any update on your friends condition, or the storm?

i was stuck in charles de gaulle airport for many many many hours as they decided they couldn't fly due to the 3 inches of snow on the ground. three inches!

the american flight next to ours had a small insurrection, and one passenger actually punched a gendarme. we decided we were african, we do waiting well. we expressed our discontent at being stranded in this freezing, uncomfortable, poorly laid out, deserted airport, with no services at all (they closed evrything) by grinding our cigarettes out onthe marble floor. even non-smokers were smoking.

we (our group of aobut 40 semi-patient passengers)sent out re-con people to find someone. someone was found, and was brought back to us. but, at the last minute, he paused, said 'scuzez, and ran away.

the information booth was deserted, but the 'phone was ringing. we answered it, and asked the people at the other end to send help, food and blankets.

i think they found us a plane just to get rid of us. they took us to the far end of the terminal to get on it, probably so the other groups wouldn't see us going home and get even stroppier.

moral of the story - don't fly through charles de gaulle if you can possibly help it. schipohl is airport heaven, as far as i'm concerned. they have comfy charis, a water massage machine, and a nusery with cribs big enough that a parent can sleep with the baby. bliss. we only had two hours there, and i wanted more!

i was also once stuck on a plane that was diverted to gander as a woman had early labour. i don't know what happened there, but we were 6 hours late. after already travelling non-stop for 3 days.

Here's the requested update:

I spent the night in Boulder. Kennda is sore, nothing to be done but rest and take the drugs. We had a nice breakfast and then I headed home since there was a high wind warning taking effect at 5pm. I took 93 home after hearing it "wasn't too bad", simply because it's a lot shorter, the sun was out, the ice was melting, and the wind wasn't bad yet. There was a five mile stretch that was all ice and slush and about 100 yards where I couldn't see five feet in front of me because of blowing snow, but we all went slow and drove out of it and it was clear the rest of the way home. A couple hours later, they closed the highway, and it remained closed all day today. The winds last night shook my apartment building and blew entire garbage bags out of the dumpster, with gusts clocked at up to 115 mph. I'm very glad to be home where I can sleep in my own bed.

glad you're home safe and sound after a little adventure. sleep well.

Happy to hear that everyone is safe, and that you made it home before the big blow. It's good to see that your internet is still working too.
When we last had 115mph winds,* it took about a week to just get power back, and a month to get all the tree debris out of the yard because I was busy helping others. I keep a small old diesel generator, and shared power with my neighbor for the week, so it was comfortable at least.
Up there, you get high wind every year, but it's rare here, so our trees grow huge between the big storms so it's really a mess when it blows hard.
*hurricane Wilma

Thank you for the update.
