Does anyone in here shoot 35mm slides? Outside of this site, I recently joined the local camera club where digital photography is enough like voodoo that it's frowned upon in most cases. I can only participate with digital photos when they have print presentations. 90% of their stuff is slides.

I was just curious if anyone here has recommendations for their favorite slide films. I bought a roll of Kodak Elite Chrome (Extra Color) for starters... I also understand that Fuji makes great film.. any comments?

I belonged to a camera club in Holland, MI. Talk about frustrating! Think of how many shots you have to take with a digital camera and multiply it by the cost of processing slides and add the time it takes to get them back. Then again, most slide-based clubs give you a year long schedule around Halloween for the upcoming year.

There are terrible problems with cliques in those clubs too.

Oh, yeah, I used Fuji. It gave a more realistic feel to my slides.

I don't like the format of the club competitions within this particular club either. They have slide competitions at almost every meeting and most of them are open subject. Occasionally, there is a challenge. The problem that I have is that for a challenge, I will have to *produce* a slide since I'm new at it. I am competing against some slide libraries that are 30 or 40 years old. They don't set a timeframe in which the photo must be taken so the newbie is at a great disadvantage.

However, competitions aside, I am in some excellent company in that group. Several of our photographers get published regularly and one has had multiple photos published by National Geographic.

The club I was in had some reputable members as well. They had a competition every month, with three categories. They were Open, Nature and Assigned. The Assigned competition was essentially what we do here. However, the Nature competition was a b*tch. They had a rule that "your slide could not show the hand of man". I had a beautiful shot of a yellow butterfly on a yellow tulip that was disqualified because tulips are cultivated flowers. Your shot couldn't even show grass that had been mowed.

I still shoot alot on slide film, to be honest I pretty much only shood digital either for work or when I am trying to come up with something for this challenge. My favorite slide film is Fuji Velvia, it gives great color saturation and just about everything I shoot on it has a pop that I haven't seen on anything else. I have shot most slide films on the market and just about have a roll of each in my camera bag or fridge most of the time. Feel free to check some of my shots out @ homepage.mac.com/corey988 don't type the www.

Corey,

Nice shots... Atlanta is a beautiful city. Is that a 'Hempen Ale' cap on the top of that stack? ;)

Some of the films I've heard good things about are the Fuji Velvia, Astia and Provia and Kodak Echtachrome.

Someone in the Seattle Mountaineers Photography group suggessted this at an intro to digital class. Get the photo all worked up like you want it, and then set up a tripod and use slide film to shoot a picture of your monitor (only the photo at full screen, none of the border of course...) It might take some practice, but when perfected, you have the flexibilty of digital and the benefits of slide all wrapped into one.
