Dear DPC members and registered users,
I was originally very strongly against the proposed rule changes in any form. If you read back in the threads, I was one of the first opponents to the 3 original suggestions made by Setzler. My vote in the yes/no thread is FOR the changes. I haven't always seen all the points being made by Setzler, Gordon, Timj and company - however, I realize that most of the DPC learning I've done has come from a select group of users - and they are most strongly in favor of this change. Even if I cannot see their reasoning, I do believe their intent is to create better photographs for us ALL.
Over the last week, we've had some rather 'spirited' discussion regarding proposed rule changes. During the heat of argument, people often act unkind towards others or say things that they would not normally say. I'm not calling anyone out by name - I am simply saying it MUST stop here.
I run a small community - we had 50 to 100 active members at one time, a message board system, a content-oriented website to support it. Two rather large fights destroyed the entirety and the remnants are a reminder to me that small communities can be easily wrecked by the kind of polarization that we've seen this week.
The end-game is that DPC needs us to be helpful to each other - go make some comments on some pics, even if you can't manage more than a "nice shot, I like this." Go send some PMs to heal these wounds - otherwise we're just a collection of malcontents - some happy, some not. DPC was here before 99% of us, but it could easily go away. Rule change, no rule change - let's get back to being the community that makes it worth CARING which rule we're operating under.
@rule change proponents - You have a good reason to be for such changes. Your arguments are strong and you have supported them very well. Mag's compromise makes a lot of sense from your original arguments.
@rule change opponents - Most of our arguments have been met with Mag's dodge/burn rule change. Whether or not this rule change stays can be revisited in a month or two - isn't it best to try a change on and see how we like it, rather than saying no without giving it a chance?
I'm in favor of DPC. To me, that's being civil to each other, not using unkind and unnecessary language, and understanding that each other has some point - neither side would still be standing if this issue were so black and white.
Time to move on.
Mav

Thanks, maverick. This *is* a good community. Even communities disagree sometimes, but gladly I do not think this will cause the breakup or dissolution of DPC.
Thanks to everyone I have learned from...I look forward to more. But more than that. Thanks everyone for always sharing a part of ME.. not just pictures that I take. Other sites, and some people I come across in daily life outside the internet do not give me that same community feeling. This is why I stayed when I found it.. for the camaraderie.

I fully agree with Karen and Mavrik, but this will not bring an end to the disputes to allow more and more editing.
Why can't we have handicaps like in many competition games? If I decide to go for the full book of editing options, I get the higher handicap. If I don't do anything else than crop and size from the original, I have the lowest one. We might decide on a few handicap-classes, set by camera-type (and -options) and edits that are allowed. |

I think that handicaps are unnecessary,.. but.. this thread is about community, so you are certainly welcome to continue the suggestions in the other thread.

Please don't view these discussions as 'disputes'. Any debate where there are polarized opinions will sometimes get a bit heated... |

I feel, the DPC community may be less fragile than mav fears. After all, the sparring was good, and the community is still sound and lively to judge by forum activity.
I second Setz's comment and say: let our debates have a lil fire.
