I think the SC can easily arbitrate that. The mortals among us could help by simply using the report post button.

Usually, off-topic posts are quite obvious.

As an example, take a look at some earlier posts in this thread, discussing tofu.

Though I'd like to point out that that was an on-topic digression, lead into by an SC member. So I think it's occasionally harder to call ;)

Also, apparent off topic ramblings can occasionally lead to on-topic creative discussion or ideas (like Ursula's bungee snowshoeing, in another thread about lenses or the upcoming Tofu modeling themed Members challenge) So the SC should, IMO tread very lightly, use a gentle hand on the rudder and carry a big club.

The tofu example was used by the SC member as an example of what would be considered off-topic in a forum thread that started with a query about a photographic technique. Others picked up the tofu ball and ran with it. In general, I agree, SC should tread lightly in regard to threads going off topic. Most forum thread discussions do wander a bit and I think that's a good thing.

Hold it just a second here -- my post was about how threads veer off-topic, using tofu as an example subject -- that post was on-topic. : )

Subsequent posts about tofu were off-topic, but because I thought they presented a useful educational example, I let them stay.

I don't think anyone really minds threads following a natural progression of conversation. It's when people jump in with completely unrelated topics and don't know when to let it drop and the original conversation is disrupted before there's a chance to finish it that it becomes a problem (see above re: tofu). Just to clarify, though, my issue wasn't with threads that get locked because they are off-topic or are no longer relevant (ie. an item was sold), it's when people don't like the responses they are getting and cry foul. Especially when it's the same individual more than once. Could I provide examples? Sure, but that would be calling people out and I wouldn't want to be a turd. ;)

So, what you are trying to say is, they were actually meta-on-topic ?

My biggest problem with this whole subject is if the OP starts a post and then adds manure, then adds the fan, should the OP duck or should we?

If someone asks a question or asks for an opinion, then they are open to the whole gambit of DPC, and there are some weirdos here! Also, a lot of hot air windbags and self opinionated experts...pretty much what you get in the real world, everyday!

Should the OP have the right to get a post locked, NO! Open a subject for general debate, you learn to duck or keep quiet.
