Any Californians or Yosemite familiars lurking around? I'm planning on driving there tomorrow afternoon/evening and having all weekend to hike around. I'm hoping there are places I can pitch a tent or sleep in the back of my car that I don't need reservations for. I'm sure there are. I heard that this is a good time to see the waterfalls before they dry up in the summer and before the larger crowds get there, but I also heard it's really wet and muddy and disgusting, so I have to devise some sort of waterproof carryer for my camera and tripods. Anyway, I was thinking of doing the touristy yosemite falls quick walk and drive up to glacier point early around sunrise for good lighting and before the crowds and then to do the mist trail hike by vernal and Nevada Falls during the day or go to the Hetch Hetchy reservior area. Any suggestions or advice?

Hi There Jason. I have been to Yosemite several times. There are no places to pull over and pitch a tent or just sleep in your car, you have to stay in a designated site, this is strictly enforced. There are several campgrounds in and around Yosemite, I have stayed in the Valley several times and in Wawona.
All through Yosemite there are many bears, where ever you end up make sure you put anything food related in the bearproof containers, they will break into your car even if they just smell food or see an item that looks like food esp. a cooler, you will see several cars with their windows pushed out and the frames bent down, don't let yours be one of them!
All of your destinations you have listed are awesome, I've hiked to the top of Yosemite falls, a very hard hike, but epic, also have hiked up to the top of half dome via the mist trail, a butt kicker.
I definatley recommend Hetch Hetchy, it's a bit of a drive, but so well worth it.
Saddlebag lake is really cool too, it has the highest camp ground that you can drive to in the US, above 10,000 feet and you can feel it.

I am headed to Tuolumne Meadows in two weeks for a backpacking trip, can't wait, have never hiked out of there, it looks like Cathedral lakes is a very photogenic place, one of Ansel Adams favorite places, I'll definatley be headed there.
Have a great trip and looking forward to your photos.

You should check out Mirror Lake for the reflection shots; it's on the East end of the valley.

And since you will be so close, you might want to visit Columbia (about 3 miles from Sonora. It's a genuine early Gold Rush town with original buildings, including Wells Fargo office that is complete with stage coach rides that get held up, saloons, hotel, museum, fire house, general store, candy store, and early Masonic Temple. Very authentic, and maintained by the state parks department. And, it's free to just walk into.

Have a wonderful trip!
