Just a note that if you put them in your Workshop folder they don't really show up in your port. :)
More on the rest shortly :) |

Thanks for taking the time! I cropped and adjusted that last one but I still can't get the moon to be "unbright" enough to see :(
Good to know about the workshop folder ;) |

Okay, first...
Your camera, according to the online manual at the kodak site DOES allow you to change the ISO in manual. Check out this link for some more info.
I think you've got a highly capable camera, just maybe not as much zoom as is required to do one of these...
That was done with a 300mm zoom on a 1.6 multiplication factor cam, so the effective focal length was 480mm. Your max focal length is 140mm, but I can't tell for sure if that's corrected for sensor size or not. You MAY have more zoom than I do.
But my shot MAY not be the kind of thing you were after. If you were after the blue ambiance, you need to expose for that and let the moon just be overexposed, or else you would have to do some kind of double exposure in Photoshop (illegal in all but Expert Editing on DPC) to get a good moon exposure.
Work with that manual mode. Most automatic camera metering, which is always used in Aperture or Shutter priority modes, is going to overexpose the moon because it's a relatively small portion of most photos. It can be tricked by pointing the camera at the moon and doing some type of Exposure Lock then recomposing and focusing elsewhere, but typically this means that your foreground or the blue ambiance you were after is lost.
Off camera flash can also be used to add "context" to moon shots, but that's an entirely different world, so I'll just tease you with it but not go there right now.
I think your camera has lots more than you're currently using, so let's explore it :)
As to which of the priorities is most important, for moon shooting it is shutter speed. Aperture is typically my preference, but I shoot in full manual nearly ALL the time nowadays. That's not a requirement or an elitist snob comment, it just works better for me that way. |

I tried capturing the moon tonight... I was going to enter it for free study but that is not going to happen now... it was a GORGEOUS setup but it came out all wrong... I am wondering if I may PM it to a member of this team so perhaps one of you can tell me what the heck I did wrong??
It is out of Free Study (obviously) because it sucks but I would like to know how to make it "not" suck in the future...
Anyone game??
Jojo | I LIKE it! I vote for this one.
I always had trouble shooting the moon, so I would be interested in getting a few pointers as well.
Hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but does anyone like this?

I think you've got a highly capable camera, just maybe not as much zoom as is required to do one of these... One of my goals for the year is to aquire a tele lens :D because you are right... I am limited to the zoom without using dz (hate it... too few pixels)

No, you are right, if you zoom too much, things come out FUZZY :(

I was after the blue LOL and the tree :) lens flare sucked but I was happy with the color... just not the moon
Work with that manual mode. Will do :) Most automatic camera metering, which is always used in Aperture or Shutter priority modes, is going to overexpose the moon because it's a relatively small portion of most photos. It can be tricked by pointing the camera at the moon and doing some type of Exposure Lock then recomposing and focusing elsewhere, but typically this means that your foreground or the blue ambiance you were after is lost. I will play with it tonight... moon should be near full again and skies look super clear... this time I will try from the fields :)
Off camera flash can also be used to add "context" to moon shots, but that's an entirely different world, so I'll just tease you with it but not go there right now.
I think your camera has lots more than you're currently using, so let's explore it :) I read the book and underlined/highlighted certain things I would like to use more... the close up flower setting is AMAZING and brings some real clarity forward (I had a BUNCH of those but my computer crashed earlier this year and I lost everything) :(( I am doing a study and shooting flowers for my blog //cdhphotos-byjojo.blogspot.com in conjunction with some other members here so maybe I will have enough time to "play" and hopefully those shots will help me improve some... hehe

That's not a requirement or an elitist snob comment, it just works better for me that way. I will try manual for a while, I think it may improve my understanding of what a digital camera will do... :D |
I really appreciate you taking the time to check those for me... I am off to read on the sites you found above...

My goal is to break a 6 this year, and, after that, a 7 :) Right now I am pretty steady with a 4.5 avg except for the free study score... I really did not expect that to do that well... :-/

Hopefully that Free Study score will get you over 6. Tell me which on eis yours and I'll use all most Ghost Accounts to boost it up... ;)
My entries are doing okay... I was hoping for something a little higher from the Centered...

These are the best ones... I didn't do anything to them... this is just how they came out... hazy skies don't work well! BUT, no lens flare! LOL
The last one is where I tried to fix the best one from the other day...

Hi,
Hope you don't mind me chiming into your thread. But if the picture is not for a challenge try what I did, use two exposures. Here is the result.
Or if you have to take it with one exposure then use the moon calculator at the WPL Links Directory and come out with one like this
.
Hope that helps and hope you didn't mind me chiming in on your thread.

You are welcome at any time. :D Thanks for the link and image examples. Jojo has me thinking about moon photos now too. :) Took a few last night but haven't uploaded here yet. Quite boring in comparison to what you two have posted. |
