Let's not care. |
*sigh* If you'd tried harder you might have gotten the thread locked before it headed off down this same predictable path. woe is us.

I'm more concerned about people that don't give information about themselves in their profile. No age, no location. Or even worse, a false age and location. I guess they want to be anonymous which is of course their right - but This is a great community - regardless of how high your voting average is, it's nice to know a bit about hte photogrpaher eh!

I'm always curious about this - so you don't think there are ever any bad photos? (given that the voting rules say 1=bad) and at least imply that we are supposed to vote using the whole scale. I.e., this bit
You must rate entries on a scale of 1 to 10. A score of 1 is a âbadâ photo, and a score of 10 is a âgoodâ photo
Obviously you get to vote how you like and it is entirely subjective too, but just like voting all 10s, would compress the scale in a meaningless way, I don't see the point of throwing away 20% of the available options. Is just taking the time to enter an image always worth a 30% score ?

Maybe i need to get my average down. But i can't seem to give a good image a bad vote. |
You are correct. DPC is plagued with a whole lot of yokels that will vote low for the most inane resons, like "I don't like yellow", or "I hate bees", reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the image. The same people vote high on other images for similar reasons that also have nothing to do with image quality. It is a special feature of DPC.

I admit - I usually only hit the 1 or 2 when an image is sooo bad that I am actually upset that I've wasted 4 seconds looking at it.

Here is how I vote. I start with 5.
If it stands out it gets a 6,7,8,or 9 accordingly.
The ones that are too small get a 2.
The others get a 5.

Gordon, the fact that someone is trying to improve their photography in the early stages of starting a new hobby, or coming to grips with a new camera could easily explain a poor photo. A bad photo, is in my opinion, very rare here, I think what some would call bad...I would call poor. This is why I only rarely drop below 4.
Someone has taken the effort to try and take a photo to enter into a challenge and it is so discouraging for a struggling beginner to be at the bottom all the time. This is why I use the scale from a rare 3 to a 9. I reserve 10 for something that is in my view exceptional. In the Harsh Environment Challenge I gave four 10's!!
I occupy a position about a third of the way off the bottom most of the time. I am not useless, I admit some of my entries have been boring to say the least. But, and this is why I vote the way I do...it is the spirit of the site, Encourage where it is due, appreciate the effort others put in and keep plugging away.
So, if I don't use the full range, that's tough, it isn't my way. |

I use the full range. It's just that I don't see that many photos that - in my view - warrant less than a 4.
Maybe if, one day, someone submitted a postage-stamp sized photo of some indistinct, blurry, object in 16 colours, I might give out a 1.
Instead, I tend to reward more the photos that I think excell. I normally vote by doing a first pass, then bumping up the ones I think best to 9 or 10. I've learnt that if I leave my favourite photos as 6 and 7 then my vote won't count as much. |

Having a voting average in the 4.x range doesn't mean you give out lots of 2s & 3s!
It could just as easily mean the majority of your votes fall in the 4-5 range - like me. As a matter of fact, I hand out 1s, 2s & 3s less frequently than 8s, 9s & 10s. I've probably only given one '1' in my 5762 votes but I've given dozens of '10's...

I think you mean "surfeit"; a "dearth" is an insufficient quantity or number; a "surfeit" is its opposite.

Personally, I don't think the 1's and 2's hurt as much as the 4's. If you have 15 or 20 4's it's going to hurt. two or three 1's won't. |

They're referring to my poor dog. Since she doesn't HAVE an ass, she bites a lot of them, in compensation.

I actually read that to mean we don't have enough yokels who hate yellow bees.
...DOWN, Karma! Down girl!
edit to add: For the benefit of us lay folks and assorted yokels, let's stick to words like "buttload" or something along those lines. :)
