Jojo - Of the two you posted I like this one the best so far.

Kind of symbolizes 'smoking hot', 'torched', 'on fire', 'sparkin' ???

That's what I was going for... something catchy without being too "punny" or "cartoonish"

I thought the first one looked a bit too Calvin and Hobbesish :D

Hey Free Agents - Hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year!

Just wanted to weigh in on the communication item brought up earlier.

WPL 4 doesn't start for a month (1st challenge is the member challenge announced Jan 29th), so no hurries on anything now that we're officially signed up.

IMO, the WPL thing is a side bonus to DPChallenge. It's fun to compete and adds some extra excitement each week, but isn't anything to get majorly worked up about regarding rules, communication overload, etc...

Follow the rules already in place for DPChallenge and everything is fine. That means keep your entries anonymous, don't collaborate on entries, and vote fairly (yes, you can vote on an image you think is someones you know, i.e. - a portrait shot, etc...), but give an honest vote. If you feel you can't vote without being biased, then don't vote - no big deal.

I was a captain for WPL 1, and a team member in WPL 3 - both times the primary mode of communication was email.

For me, email is probably better for what needs to be communicated - which really isn't that much. A head count on who's in each week mostly. I think email is the better choice for sharing scores also (if you want to...certainly not required, nor will I prompt for those).

This thread is probably the best place for post-challenge banter. A pat on the back, critiques (if desired), etc...

In the long run, I hope that everyone is here for the same reasons I am - and that's to enter challenges because you want to, you enjoy photography as a hobby/enthusiast and would like to grow in this pursuit, and you like to compete.

Smile, and keep having fun! :D

I think I'm going to have a hard time deciding! :D May have to put these (yours and Jojo's) to a team vote in the near future.

With this one, would it make much difference to make the logo a little taller so you could bring the 'Free Agent' text to center (with normal spacing) and still see the 'Team' in the bg?

Also, I'm thinking we should be plural 'Team Agents' for more of a team concept.

I like where you're going with this. Thanks so much!

I like this one, perhaps squeezed a little left to right to minimize the separation between Free and Agent.

I personally like the use of Free Agent WITHOUT the plural, because the "Team" indicates the plural. The use of the singular negates the idea of "free agency" on an individual level, and, to me, cements the idea of a "team" more by eliminating "individual" issues. Just my two cents, I'm on the team either way :) I just like Team Free Agent better than Team Free Agents. Sit back and say it to yourself half a dozen times and see if my version doesn't roll off your tongue better :)

But no big deal either way.

You the boss, chief. I'm just a Free Agent... :)

Whatever everyone likes, seriously. No worries to me either way. We are "Free Agents" on the WPL, so if you really wanna change that, it's up to you.

Let's just take pics :) Good ones.

I know I have too much free time... I have 5 kids and they are all out of school so I have to sit at home :(

I re-worked the fireworks one... (looks like I may have to take off the S now though)

Better?
Worse?
Want me to stop? LOLOL

Crud, crud, CRUD! The insanity of it all... :D

You're right. I submitted our name that way as 'Free Agents' (plural) and for the final (really, really!!!) decision we'll KEEP it that way.

There, now I'm totally embarrassed. :/ Geesh. All for a name. Like nards said...let's just take pics. :P

...and FWIW, I'm just a Free Agent also. No 'Boss/Chief' around these parts. :)

OKAY... I HAVE TROUBLE :(

I tried capturing the moon tonight... I was going to enter it for free study but that is not going to happen now... it was a GORGEOUS setup but it came out all wrong... I am wondering if I may PM it to a member of this team so perhaps one of you can tell me what the heck I did wrong??

It is out of Free Study (obviously) because it sucks but I would like to know how to make it "not" suck in the future...

Anyone game??

I always had trouble shooting the moon, so I would be interested in getting a few pointers as well.

Hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but does anyone like this?

So, do you have your screwups available?? Can we post our "shoot the moon :)" photos here and compare??

I will NEVER get the lovely blue hue that was out there tonight again...

:( *sigh*

I love that little logo!! It is so cute!! I like it :D Let's see what the others say!!

Good Morning. In regards to getting a good photograph of the moon, I've not had much experience personally, but I've heard that the "sunny 16" rule works well quite often with moon shots.

You may want to look it up, but it's basically f16 and shutter of 1/125 at ISO 100. If you adjust the ISO the shutter speed should move also, i.e. ISO 200 = 1/250 shutter. Not sure of all of the values, but that's a rough outline of the principle.

Hmmm. Now I'm going to have to give it a try again myself. :D

Thanks for the team logo contribution Todd.

That brings us to 3. There's only 7 of us, and 4 that have not submitted a logo. I'm wondering if a vote will work, or (gulp) am I going to have to pick 1?

Ok. How about I collect votes from the rest of the team Blue Moon, nards656, and youngnova. Send me an email with your pick.

Choices:
1)
2)
3)

The "sunny f16 rule" is basically f/16 and 1/ISO seconds. In other words, if you're shooting at 100 ISO, use the setting closest to 1/100 seconds.

Most people overexpose the moon. Greatly. They don't realize that it's moving, and the extended exposure time also causes blur. Also, most of the time, all they get is the moon, because they shoot too late at night. Shoot while there is still light in the sky if you want to capture any sky, else the exposure time required to capture the sky will ruin the moon.

The best way to put the moon in a pic is a double exposure, but that's only really good with film. It's complicated with Digital unless you shoot Nikon....

And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use a tripod.

Okay, what if you can't adjust your f/stop?

I suppose you have all noticed that I am shooting with a Kodak P880. This is a camera for dummies :)
If I go to the S (shutter priority) setting, all I can change is ISO, Shutter, and White Balance my f/stop adjusts automatically to fit with the other settings.
I can choose from settings to change depending on which is more important. If the ap is more important, I can use setting "A" and shutter is setting "S" and in setting "M" I can change the ap and the shutter but not the ISO or light exposure setting.

So, setting my ISO to 50 and with the following variables, here are the thumbnails for what screwed up. I didn't edit these so you could see exactly what the camera does. It has a REAL problem with the dark.

ap: 1:3.6 (auto) sh: 1.0s

ap: 1:3.6 (auto) sh: 2.0s

ap: 1:2.8 (auto) sh: 10.0s

Now, I can't really complain about the last shot except that it gave me lens flare and the bottom of the tree is too dark. I was going to use the 10 seconds to run over and fire a test flash at the base but come to find out, my flash only works when it is ON my camera :(

I wrote this out because my camera is a bit different in available settings than most and there are some things I simply cannot change at the same time as others (wish I could, I tear my hair out over this). I suppose my question is:

"If you HAD to choose ONE priority setting, which one would it be?" :0)

Jojo

Edit: Of course I use a tripod ;) I didn't really want to have these floating around on my profile LOLOL *turns red in face* But, I guess I don't have a choice :P
