So, I'm about to go out and play for the first time with my new Cokin Filter System. I have only one piece of glass so far--the Gradient Neutral Density (ND8).

My question is, should I use automatic focus or will the focusing method be fooled by the glass (such as when shooting inside through a window to the outside)?

I know it's an easy test--try it out both ways, but I wanted to hear from some other experienced Cokin photographers.

Thanks in advance!

I have not yet found a problem with auto focus and I use several Cokin filters, including a circular polariser. Fun to experiment with, too :-)

I have a reasonably decent set of Cokin filters (CC and contrast for shooting film, grads, solid NDs, etc.) and have never had any auto-focus issues with them, even when stacking two or three.

(For the curious... ND8+ND4+CP for a really long exposure)

I typically haven̢۪t had auto-focus issues with the majority of the Cokin filters. However some of the thick optical effect filters do cause problems.

When I use them, I will auto focus before sliding the filter in place and switch over to manual to shoot. I don̢۪t use them very often any more. Most of the effects can be done more accurately with software.

Here are the first photos using my new Pro-Series Cokin Filter System with a Graduated Neutral Density (#8) rectangular glass filter.

I realize that this landscape does not really take advantage of the graduated nature of this filter (where part of the original composition should be relatively dark). This is why the foreground lawn is a bit overexposed in the second image.

The first photo (without ND filter) was taken at a shutter speed of 1/125s. The second photo (with ND filter) was taken at a shutter speed of 1/60s. Both were using a form of autofocus. I autofocused, then switch to manual, preserviing the focus ring position so that both photos would be equally focused.

I'll post better examples later.
