Everything was fine this morning...then the day wore on.
The computer, as it occasionally does, didn't recognize my usb CF card reader. A reboot usually fixes this.
Since i was rebooting anyway, I figured to put in the DVD drive I got to replace the one that died about 3 weeks ago (i put my old cd burner in in the meantime).
I reboot...issues all over the place. No G drive (my data drive). Hmm...
AH-HAH! I turn things off and re-set the jumpers on the DVD drive - from maaster to slave, and reboot....well, no.
Lots of beeps. No re-boot. No nuttin.
A few minutes research tells me it's memory error...out comes the new 1Gb and in goes the old 512.
Things boot and appear normal! Hurray!
Then I try to run PS (ver 7).
I get the big window, the splash screen and all the quick print that says it's loading this that and the kitchen sink...and then it all vanishes. It won't run.
I dragged the directory from my laptop installation over and it does the same thing -so apparently some file PS needs that resides outside the PS directories, is corrupted. This sucks.
Unless somebody has an idea (like a list of files and where they are) I guess I'll have to reinstall PS and hope that fixes it.

| if you're running windows and didn't disable "System Restore", then you might wanna try that. But then again, if you don't mind having your customized settings reset, a full reinstall of Photoshop would be better, IMHO. |

A full re-install (plus initial uninstall) is probably your best option.

Just thoughts about your hardware issues..
Why would a new DVD drive not run in your computer with the same RAM as before?
Why would it say your G drive is no longer there? Is it really not seeing it or is it just not listed?
Did you accidentally unplug your G drive when installing your DVD drive?
Can your power supply support the new DVD drive?
Is your DVD drive sharing a power cable with your G drive?

I have 4 drives in my system - C of course, and D on that same cable. G and F (my dvd) also share a cable. You have to set the jumpers on the drives to MS (master) SL (slave) or CS (cable select). I have always used MS/SL. The new DVD was set to MS as is my G drive - can't have that on the same cable.
Yeah, the RAM should not have been an issue...i'll try it again later today and see what the deal it. I might stil be under warranty.

I bet this is it...two uses before it quit the windows, the loose ones, all come up in weird places - not where I left them. Then I started it and got the windows that says my main and scratch drives are on the same volume...they are not. THen it quit altogether.
I'll get my coffee and give it a go.
THANKS!
that seems to have fixed it - Thanks again!

Incidently - Most Windows applications have loads of files which install outside the main application folder. There are usually DLL's which install into windows\system folder. And they are registered in the registry in a certain way during installation.
So, if an application gets screwed up, the only way to fix it is by re-installing. Trying to copy a folder across from another PC won't work.
That's why it's called 'DLL Hell' |

| while you were messing with the DVD drive, you didn't knock anything inside the case? i'd go back in and make sure everything was secure before rebooting again.. |
