| The Canon 1dMkII hits 8.33 frames/second. In an almost dead heat, the nikon D2X (in high-speed cropped mode) hits 8.0 frames/second. |

The Nikon D2Hs also gets 8 frames/second. It's a variation of the D2X that's designed for speed (it gets the 8 fps in regular mode and has a giant buffer) for action shooters and the like. |

I believe the original D2H also boasts this feature. |

| curious: how fast was the fastest SLR in terms of fps? |

there are some cameras that can do 10fps with a pellicle mirror. Basically the mirror never moves, but you lose a 1/3 of your light on the film.
edit: canon made one that can do 14fps.

those cameras with this pellicle mirror you spoke about, are they SLRs or something unique? |

| they're still SLR cameras, they just have a mirror designed to refect light to the viewfinder and to the film at the same time. Since the mirror doesn't have to get out of the way, there's no blackout, and it's quieter, but you sacrifice light. |

thanks. sounds like the same way some of those "live preview" modes work in certain dSLRs today. So it's not a new invention after all.
Anyway, back to the original thread topic - seems like even digital still has got some catching up to do as compared to older SLRs, at least in terms of fps. |

Okay, maybe this one isn't a SLR (no mirror), and it's only 2 mega-pixel, but how's 1000fps for speed?
Anyway, you're correct, I don't think there's any production DSLR as fast as the fastest film SLR, the Canon 1v |

| the Canon F-1 did 14fps, as i stated earlier, so the 1V while the fastest recent film camera isn't the fastest out there. |

It sort of depends how you want to look at it though, while the F-1 might do 14fps, it is limited to a total of 36 frames, which the 1DII might only clip along at 8.5 fps, but will shoot 40 in a burst and continue after that.

Saying that 8.5fps is faster than 14fps because you can take more pictures is kind of a strange argument.
Let's consider video cameras. Consider any non-consumer 1080i (or higher resolution) video camera that has changable lenses. Most of them will do 30fps at 2mp until the batteries or memory run out, and some can do 60fps for a little while. Not only that but the really high end movie cameras can do 24fps at 7mp. |

Though none of those are SLRs.
I don't say that 8.5fps is faster than 14fps. It is just capable of the fastest sustained burst that has been possible with a SLRs

There were adapters that let 35mm SLR's use bulk rolls of film, and a 150' roll is like 30 rolls of 36exp I think. Of course they look ridiculous, and you might as well carry a 35mm movie camera...
edit: holy crap, that video clip is awesome, gordon.

Cool sound at for example at the Olympics where they put a lot of pg's together and you can hear the rattle of 50 to 100 cameras slapping their mirrors at 8fps at the same time.

Even when its just one and its at your own eye. Its an amazing sound to hear. And even better when it allows you to capture the "moment" in a sporting event, especially when you dont have all the experience like the pros do, but you still end up with the shot. Sure makes the editor happy.
