How would this sunset have done in the duotone challenge?

That is definitly different. I like it though. I wonder if they took photos of sunsets way back when?

Good question.... I don't know if they did. I assume they did. Does anyone know where an example of a real duotone of a sunset taken way back when is?

It's a little too strong and too much green in it I think. Great shot however. |

I would have griped about the tilted horizon. lol. but that's just me. I think it's an obsessive compulsive thing. |

There is a sepia sunset HERE that says it was a photographic illustration in a book a REALLY long time ago. Is this what you were looking for? You have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.

I think its a nice photo, but I don't like the actual duotone colour. Like Chris said, its a bit to green. I would have given it a more red hue.

I doubt their film could have handled the brightness (but that's just a guess!).

Thanks Heather! I was thinking my sepia tone in my camera was off, but now I see it is right on.
My photos look just like that one. The dark browns with a hint of red. The tones are right on.

this is a shot called 'an effect of the sun' taken by Gustave Le Grey in 1869. Is that far enough back for us? i guess there are a previous 21 yers for something older to have been taken.
edit: I have the date wrong - it's part of a series of shots taken between 1856 and 1859.

I think the biggest problem would be the exposure time (which for daguerreotype process is in the 3 minute range) There are certainly plenty of early landscape shots, but maybe not so many of dynamic lighting situations ? Also most of the focus seemed to be on portraiture at that period. |

RLS I'm going to give you my honest opinion of the photo - I hope I don't offend - and it's just the opinion of one person and not of someone who has any authority on this!!
I think the sunset you've captured is pretty enough but the photo doesn't appeal to me hugely - sunset photos really are two a penny so for a photo in this genre to succeed it needs to pack quite a punch.
In terms of content I think it could really do with a focal point - an interesting silhouette in the foreground or a boat or building further back - something more for me to look at.
In terms of composition I think the horizon would be better placed on a third - in this image, with it's lovely water detail, I'd crop down from the top rather than up from the bottom. Then I'd crop from the left to keep the current ratio - this would also place the sun itself on an intersection point.
Anyway, that's my thoughts on it.
