around $400 will get you a Tamron 90mm macro, Which is a very nice lens. If it were me I would spend the other 600 on a nice walk around lens 28-200 or something and there would still be enough left over for 50-55mm 1.8 or some filters perhaps even a speed light if you get a good price on the second lens. You would have a pretty nice set up then.

For the record I think I'm getting the D80/18-135mm kit and a Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro. Then I'll save up for a few months and get a decent telephoto.

...I think

I would get the tokina/nikon12-24mm lens, OR the 10-20mm sigma. And 50mm 1.8 and nikob 70-200 mm 2.8 VR. Tree lenses I KNOW, the 50mm is so cheap! ;-)

I changed my mind.. I should get a good all around and a telephoto before the macro.. back to looking at tons of lenses!

You are allowed to change your mind over and over again...

I like your choice of body D80 is a great camera it really is. if you want to get a longer zoon than a macro then I think you should go with a D80 body only (dont forget that extra battery and/or grip) I have just added the Sigma 18-50 DC f2.8 to my collection and it ROCKS!!! amazing, well priced lens and the important factor is the f2.8... Then, if no macro is needed yet might I suggest you go buy a 2nd hand 80-200 AF f2.8, its quite an old lens but one of Nikons finest and still pretty cheap these days because of the many replacement ones like the 80-200AFS and the new VR version.

Body - Nikon D80 (extra batt)
Sigma 18-50 EX f2.8 DC
Used - Nikon 80-200 AF f2.8 ED

This leaves a small gap between 50-80mm SOOOO, you may want to consider buying the D80 with the 18-70mm kit lens instead of getting the Sigma.

Happy shopping.

Choosing the right lens is very subjective. It is difficult to make a valid recommendation without insight into your shooting style and subject interest.

In many ways, all of these recommendations are valid, it all depends on what you want to do with a lens?

In my case, I built a large inventory of lenses for the simple reason of trying different things.

Nikkor 17-35 mm f2.8 D AFS
Nikkor 28-70 mm f2.8 D AFS
Nikkor 28-200 mm f3.5-f5.6 D IF
Nikkor 80-200 mm f2.8 D AFS
Nikkor 80-400 mm f4.5-f5.6 D VR
Nikkor 28 mm f1.4 D Fast F-Stop
Nikkor 60 mm f2.8 D Micro
Nikkor 85 mm f1.4 D Fast F-Stop
Nikkor 85 mm f2.8 M Perspective Control / Macro
Nikkor 105 mm f2.0 D DC
Nikkor 105 mm f2.8 D Micro
Nikkor 200 mm f4.0 D Micro
Nikkor 500 mm f8.0 M Catadioptric
Nikkor 1000 mm f11.0 M Catadioptric
Nikkor 50 mm F1.4 M Vintage

So, I can play with all of them. There are still other lenses that I hope to purchase in time, for example, the 10 mm wide angle. So, it never ends.

If I had to judge my own style, I would say that I prefer telephoto and closely cropped images, yet many others find these images restrictive and uncomfortable.

So, make a decision based upon your own personal needs (general purpose lenses) or your personal preference (wide angle, telephoto, etc.) and go have fun.
