I try to avoid paying too much attention to the title, for me the picture should stand on it's own merits. I always feel slightly irked when I have to read a title to figure out what the heck I'm looking at.

But it seems I'm in the minority :-)

Maybe we should have Title Of The Week contest where the admins get to post the photo of their choice (maybe from a pool submitted by members) and we all get to submit/vote on titles.

I'd like to see examples of (past) photos where people think the title either helped or hurt significantly ... otherwise this discussion seems distinctly hypothetical and nebulous to me. (distinctly ... nebulous ... get more coffee ....)

Maybe we could have an open challenge where all the pictures have no titles and the commenters title them. We could compare and contrast via the forums to see who had the most of one title suggestion.

I think we're due for an open challenge anyway. So why not have a little twist?

That's one way to make sure we each get 120 comments!

Er. This is a follow-up to General E's question; 2 comments slipped in while I was looking through my votes to see if I found anything where title affected vote for me.

"Through Rose-Tinted Glasses" in the Duotones. Without the title I would have voted it lower, but the title made me look at it again and gave me a different perspective on the photo.

I think that's the only one where it mattered to my vote, although it's hard to remember for sure, but I will note that what I comment on is also affected by the title, sometimes to a large extent.

Just a thought - don't know what the comment was, but maybe the issue they had is right there in your complaint - it is the home of the subject. The challenge description says "the place you call home".

Also, I don't know that answering rudeness with rudesness is necessarily the best response....

But ... in toning a foliated landscape with red rather than green the photographer "should" have gotten the point across without the title, except for folks like me who can't see that kind of subtle red.

But the use of a "recognizable" phrase as title let you look at it again as not just someone playing around with weird duotone colors.

So, unless everyone is REALLY going to stop for a MINUTE and really look at all the photos, I think the titles serve as a useful adjunct.

Choose one wisely.

Why not move the title to display below the image on the voting page, so folks who wanted their photographic judgement unsullied by verbiage can vote that way, and they want to comment, just decide on the vote first (the title makes no difference, remember?) Those who want to see the title first can scroll down before they vote.

As I eluded to in my original post, if YOU the photographer want your title to 'irrelevant', then why have one. For me personally, if I see a title on a given photo, it will have 'some' bearing on the feeling the photo imposes, sorry.

Ditto. When looking at 200-300 photos, it's not always possible to take a minute or two to appreciate all the photographer intended, and the title *can* help the process along. (As others have mentioned, a bad title can hurt just as much though.)

Personally, I try to take the photo on it's own merit. If I don't "get it", either in understanding what I'm looking at or its relationship to the challenge, I'll then look to the title for help. If I still don't get it, then I'll probably mark it down. On the other hand, if I suddenly do get it, sometimes the cleverness of the shot comes through, and it might boost my impression, and therefore my vote.

I think you mis-understood me ... I am a dedicated titler and often take them into consideration (almost always as a positive influence) when voting.

Some other people here would rather vote on all photos without titles. For THOSE people I suggest the simple solution of relocating the title to below instead of above the photo, so everyone can choose for themselves whether to see/take into account the titles.

This would be a far easier coding job than the other two options I can think of:
--checkbox on prefs page for "Display Title When Voting"
--button on the voting page to pop-up the title

However, if either of these latter options are considered, I'd REALLY like the same options for individual choice to apply to the photographer's comment field (during the voting) as well ....

As a teacher, I would always give one question of "bonus." It couldn't hurt your grade, it could only help you - that's what I do with titles.

That's a pretty good plan. What/who do you teach?

I raerely judge on the basis of the title at all.

I'm with John on this one. And to illustrate, one of john's images:

This image isn't half as effective without the title. The understated humor in the title really works, and transforms the meaning of the image. I laughed out loud, very literally, when I saw this one!
