Getting a tripod for Christmas and need to let the folks know what to get.
Any first hand experience with Giottos?
They don't carry them at my local shop, just Gitzo and Bogen/Man.
I like:
- the idea of the center column converting to a lateral arm (originally considered the Gitzo Explorer)
- twist instead of levers
- wide range (if not infinite) of leg positions
- Max height ~70+ inches
Which of these would you recommend?

I know there are duplicate 3021PRO's but was thinking of getting the one with the mini ball head and then use the head on my monopod and get a better ballhead for the tripod, one with tension control.
thanks

If by "twist instead of levers" you are referring to the leg locks, that is NOT a plus IMO. The 3021 Pro has beautiful flip locks that can be easily re-tensioned if necessary over time, and they are MUCH easier to use on the fly than the twist-locks are. Plus the twist-lock connectors have a nasty habit of getting grit in them and/or corroded, or actually freezing up on you in really cold weather for that matter.

Thanks for the info about the twist locks, Bear.

I use the 3021BPro and wouldn't trade it for anything else out there. You don't have to buy it with a head. I think it's about $150 without a head.

| Also, the 3021Pro does allow the column to be placed in lateral (horizontal) position. Not a lightweight tripod, but solid, quick to set up, and versatile. |

Another vote for the 3021Pro.

Absolutely; 3021 is the class of its class... I get shivers when I think the lovely Cindi and the studly Fritz both favor MY choice of tripod :-)

Thanks for the votes of confidence on choosing the 3021.
I went ahead and sent the link to the gift giver and hopefully it will arrive in time for Christmas morning.
I went ahead and got a ball head with it as I figured I can use the 486RC2 to see what I like/don't like and can always put it on the monopod. I really don't like the 3229 swivel I got with it.
Yeah it may be hefty but I don't plan on long hikes with it, maybe a short 3 or 4 hour one occasionally but not too worried about shaving every last gram. |

I use a 3221, the tall version of that one I believe. Its sturdy in the wind. Its also heavy on long hikes.
I use the 3030 3way head that came on it. Everyone seems to push the ball heads but they just dont seem to work for me. |
