Let's say for example an image has blown highlights. Or for any technical (or compositional) no-nos for that matter

Do you as a voter instantly assume the photographer had no idea what they were doing?

Or do you look harder and see if the photographer may have been breaking the rules on purpose?

I always try to see it as an artistic choice. :)

Sometimes I assume it was a mistake, and sometimes I give the benefit of the doubt, but, either way, if it's a distracting element that I don't like I'd probably make a comment about it and maybe drop the shot a point.

It depends.

Now, thats a question I oft ask myself and have come up with this...

(keeping on the blown element theme) if the picture is of a general 'average/poor' quality with basic mistooks then I'm more likely to assume it was unintentional whilst if the rest of the image is a 'WOW' for technical/compositional/subject matter/lighting etc then I'm inclined to think its intentional.

2 extremes I know and would vary my thoughtsd along the line.

That is usually my thought processes.

There's a different second step for me though

See the technical flaw or non-standard approach.

Consider if it works or not.

I don't vote on if the person did it deliberately or not, but if it is effective or not. At least I try to.

I usually think: "What's wrong with my eyes?" ... or â€Â¦ "is there something wrong with my monitor?"
;P
