Way to go Blue Moon - by the look of your portfolio - we can't expect much sucking from you.

I've seen them in concert twice in the same year (1975). I still believe that DSOM is the greatest album ever recorded by anyone. I'm so old that I remember when that album first came out. You know you're old when you still refer to them as albums.
I have a couple of great ideas but I don't know if I can pull them off or not. One of them is using a real early Pink Floyd song. Back in the Syd Barrett days. Pre 1970. If you ever want to listen to classic Floyd, listen to the "Relics" album.
One of the problems in shooting the photo is that it will be limited to the weekend to take the outdoor pictures because it's dark when I go to work in the morning and dark when I get home.
By the way, my "Life" shot got 3 favorites. I've never had a picture do that before. I'm happy.

Go Leah on your pet entry. I will suck enough for both of us, and for team chasing butterflies. Pets at 4.5 (too light) is close to death 4.9 (too dark), my dirt is hanging at 5.25 but going down. I think I will skip Sky, if I get lucky I might go for something sticky, but I probably put my efforts into something truly bizarre only a true Pink Floyd fan will understandâ€Â¦

There's a theater in Richmond that does "Midnight Movies" once a week, showing older movies. Sometimes they actually show The Dark Side of Oz. In a theater! And I haven't seen it. Even though I know of twice when it's been done. Silly midnight. |

Question - does basic vs. advanced affect what concepts people have / choose to shoot? Normally I only have one idea and I go with it, so I'm interested in hearing how other people do things. |

I've put something really poor in Sky. I was just playing around with the various filters, because the weather has been raining here, and there have been no good opportunities for interesting sky shots. It is going to really suck, but what the heck.
I've been doing ok on Dirt and For Sale -- 5.8 and 5.9
I don't have any Pink Floyd ideas yet, although I love The Wall album (didn't see the movie). It was my daughter's favorite album when she was a teen, and I heard it nonstop for months. Fortunately she has great taste in music, IMO. DSOM is good too, but I like The Wall better. |

I'm not on Team Novice for nothing. I'm still at the stage of shooting what I see and then doing the best I can with what I have, within what ever rules are in effect. Planning ahead is for real photographers. But DPC is teaching me to look at things differently and I am seeing more possibilities. Where I used to use only my eyes for photography, I am now beginning to use my brain as well. |

On at least one occasion (High Contrast), I probably should've not done my concept without advanced editing, but I liked the additional challenge of doing a double exposure under basic rules.
But usually, advanced vs. basic rules have no effect on my choices.
Now, for expert rules, that might not end up being the case. For Sky, the fact we could composite multiple shots definitely was key to my entry. For once, I actually went shooting with various specific elements in mind that just couldn't be shot using the same settings.
I'm delighted with how it came out, and will probably offer it as a print. :)

Ain't it cool what we pick up sometimes? But Julianne, don't let the brain get in the way, either. Don't skip a shot because "aww, the background will be cluttered" or "it's too dark and it'll be grainy" - sometimes those turn out to be fine shots. Not for DPC purposes, of course... :-) |

I've definitely evolved, and I hope it continues. I started out using only my eyes. "Cool" shots grabbed my attention. Then it shifted to my brain - how could I create a certain effect, how I could use a neat technique. Now I'm starting to use my heart more. I still fuss over things like whether 30% sharpening looks ever so slightly better or worse than 60% sharpening, but I'm getting better and closing my eyes for 10 seconds and looking at it again to see if I like it as is.

Sounds like you are doing great in Dirt and For Sale! My dirt sucks (getting those ornery DNMC comments, as technically there is no dirt in the photo) and my For Sale got DQ'd, so I'm glad at least one of us novices is rising to the challenge, so to speak. Way to go, Julianne!!! |

Oh, by the way, thought that submitting a 'straight from camera' shot in sky was equivalent to bringing a plastic knife to Uzi fight, but seems to be doing ok at least - hanging in around 5.5. I definitely won't get DQ'd for this, unless it is for NOT editing in an expert editing challenge...LOL

You may want to remove the sky outtake before the SC does. |

I'm happy with my Sky score, not to mention that I made sherpet and skewsme happy, which is enough of an accomplishment in itself.

Sorry guys..
I DID NOT enter the skys challenge. the reason i put the shot up here was i was at a local camera club meeting last nite and was telling Chaimelle about working on one for the challenge but didnt think i was going to get it done in time (which i didnt). So i put it up here so she could see it. Sorry i dont know all the rules here yet.
Do i need to remove it from my portfolio also? |

No. It's just that there is often fuss over discussing images in the forum that relate to current challenges - even if you haven't entered. |

Thanks for update, mist, I'd missed that particular can of worms too.
Folks, I am suspended till the 22nd so won't be entering for a week. Team Novice teammates, I am so sorry to let you guys down, although my scores would likely have only brought our team closer to the brown...
Again, be sure to err on the side of caution in editing, even in advanced. If in doubt, submit a ticket. (Which I obviously should have done, but hindsight is much sharper than most of my photos :-) |
