There are the written rules of DPC and there are the unwritten ones.
One of the critical unwritten rules is that photos must remain anonymous during voting period. This implies that you do not post comments in the forums that identify your (or anyone elses) photo until the voting has closed.
This also implies that you do not reveal your identity with private messages. A breach of these conventions feels to me like vote tampering.
There is a new trend (or maybe it is old and I've just recently been hit) to send private messages of complaint to voters who give negative comments. Whether or not the negative comment was justified, helpful in intent, or rude it can wait till the voting is over. Once you complaim you reveal which photo is yours.
When the voting has closed blasting the commenters is (technically) allowed but it will only result in fewer meaningful comments overall. It should be easy to ignore those you don't agree with and learn from those that you do. |

While I don't encourage blasting people who give negative comments, I don't see a problem with messaging someone who gives you a comment during the challenge. I have sent messages to explain a question that was asked in a comment, or to request a more in depth explanation of a comment before.
This only effects a small portion of the votes in a contest (hardly ever would this involve more than 2 or 3 voters), and it is unlikely to create any significant change in the scoring at all.
While revealing your submission to a broad group of people is clearly unacceptable, I don't think we need to pretend that the scores in this contest are of such an extreme importance that we cannot afford to reveal our identity to a few people in order to better explain or understand the photography involved.
As for specifically berating negative comments, I recieved a message of that nature a while back. In responce, I greatly expanded my comment on the shot to further explain my score, but I didn't feel at all compelled to change the score itself.

Thanks for your response Wingy. It is always embarrassing when someone half my age is more mature than I! |

I wish we would've stayed with the whole anonymity in commenting. I think that has somewhat of an impact on the kinds of comments people leave, myself included. I was never in favor of that when the initial poll was taken after DPC2 was unleashed. I think that the effectiveness of commenting has been affected. I would've liked the voting to stay the way it was with DPC1.
As far as it is now, I don't object to contacting the commenters after they've left a comment. If it was never supposed to happen, we wouldn't know who commented until the challenge was done, right? I usually don't get PM'ed about my comments. Occasionally I'd say. I PM people once in awhile especially if they've posed a question in their comment. I try to get it answered while its fresh in my mind. I don't feel this is a real problem. Generally the questions don't have anything to do with score, so I don't think its a factor to answer them.
