I'm actually pretty shocked at the score. |

This is a brief explanation about why I became so enraged with one of the comments I recieved in this challenge.
Ten years ago I was homeless and strung out on speed. It was one of the worst periods of my life and I fought and crawled out of it and things have been going awesome since. Sometimes I look back and wonder at the fact that I'm not dead.
When I shot this, I saw a man dieing in the streets right in plain view and took the shot. I'm not even sure I should have submitted it still but there was a lot of emotion involved in the shot and editting it.
I recieved a comment telling me that this was a cheap shot...
Normally I don't care at all when I get a negative comment but this person can kiss my ass... They have no idea what this shot is about.
On the other hand, I really have to thank Posthumous. His comment late in the challenge made my day. It's great to get a good comment during a challenge but it's that much more satisfying when you get one from your own team.
Thanks bro.

Careful, the atmosphere is very rare up there in '7' land. Really, this is so impressive. My goal for 2007 is to get a '6', and here you are flirting with '7'. You give all of us suckers hope. |

That commentor can be ornery and even rude, and sometimes he has tunnel vision, but he knows a lot about photography and sometimes these very traits make him brilliant. Disregard him in this case, but I suggest you don't cut him off completely.

sickdog: One of the worst feelings can be when we have a lot of emotional investment in the subject and that just doesn't come across to a viewer. There are always going to be people who see things differently or who just plain don't get it. I understand totally why you're upset and I hope you feel better about it soon. Just focus on the fact that you got a really good shot and it's one that captured something meaningful to you. Those are very awesome things. |

i already feel better about it.

i'm currently very happy to be on this team and looking forward to entering Pink Floyd.
i'm just trying to think of something that everyone else wont enter.

First, congrats to bryantbus on that 7.0+ How's the air up there? I want to try some myself!
Second, my For Sale entry got DQ'd. Evidently I got rid of too much background stuff (the background was only partially black when I took the shot, and in submission is fully black). Although I'm not happy about the decision, I respect the integrity of the site council, so will move on to Pink Floyd, for which I have a grand idea, if I can pull it off (not likely).
A note of caution to all my fellow suckees: my impression of advanced editing was that heavy cloning in the background is not a problem, due to rule that you can change color of any portion of photo. This is not the case! I post caution because I saw a lot of pet photos with fairly obvious heavy background work - others out there are making the same mistake. There is no worse feeling than getting DQ'd when you thought you were within the rules - especially when your photo is doing well! Don't want it to happy to any of you.
Sickdog send you a PM about post.

I know what you mean about Pink Floyd. I don't want to do the obvious. I have some good ideas but I don't know how hard they will be to pull off. |

Sorry to hear that, noraneko. Cleaning up the background in advanced editing is one of the most subjective areas of the Advanced Editing rules and I've seen experienced DPCers get DQd because of it. Keep on truckin'

Thanks, Don! I'm glad I didn't get a suspension, as I really want to enter Floyd. |

You will get a suspension. (Unless they told you otherwise). It just might not happen immediately. If you get your Floyd entry in before they suspend you, it will stay in. If not, you won't be able to enter. I got the one week suspension when I self-DQ'd, then a week or two later had a DQ. But, it took a little while for it to go through. |

So I thought you could Clone in advanced editing as long as you do not remove a major element? I may be wrong but I see that as - I can remove dust, glare, imperfection in background, or some power lines - If there is a car, or person, or you took it out side and took out side and replaced the background that is not ok.

There was part of a fence I cloned out. I have a feeling this one was on the line, so to speak. I'm cool with the DQ. Just wanted to let other suckees know to err on the side of caution. |

Stickdog- You are a strong person, I truly admire your strength it takes a lot to open up to a group with such personal information. It is hard sometimes with the challenges because we as the artist feel as though the photo is part of us and it is our expression of the subject at hand so we reveal our inter lives to others. Death is a very harsh subject, I avoided this subject as I have lost both my Mother & Father I think I would not be able to express myself and keep a grip on the technical comments.
You are so lucky to have found your way back to the world. I lost my best friend to meth and I have seen first hand what it can do to families. She turned in to someone else. For a long time I thought I could help her, I gave her money to pay bill but she spent it on drugs. She was a very pretty woman, the drugs gave her winkles, and sores all over she keep saying it was an reaction to some food. I started just buying food for her so her kids would have food. In the end it got ugly, she hit her daughter and the daughter came to live with me for awhile. She blamed me for that and told people I took her child from her. It has now been over a year sense we last spoke. I am not sure I can forgive her for all she did to me during this time. From what I understand she has not changed at all. Death comes in many ways, Stickdog I am glad you are alive and well with us. God bless..CB

The issue is that if you remove all background information to make it pure black, you've removed a major element: the background. Allowing us to remove the entire background would mean there's no need to think about the background when taking the shot, and that makes it too much about editing instead of what's in the frame when you click the shutter button. SandyP lost a ribbon as a result of the same problem, so know that you're not alone. Just leave a little detail in there so it's clear you actually had a background, and you'll probably be okay. Same goes for silhouettes; if there's detail in the original, darkening it is okay, but not total black.
So indeed, be careful. If you have any doubts, send your edit to the SC using help->contact and ask. I've used that several times, and they're usually pretty quick to respond.

Sorry to hear about that Catherine. It sounded like you had a pretty good shot going. Do we have to wait till the end to see it or can it be shown now since it has been DQ'd? |
|
|
12/14/2006 12:10:17 PM · #2096 |
Will wait till challenge is over to err on side of caution. Last thing I need is another black mark! (Can't really see how showing would hurt, unless it caused a member of our team to reevaluate another photo/s in the For Sale contest.) Anyway, trust me, it's solid, but nothing out of this world. |

Silverfoxx thanks for words of encouragement! I picked up an awesome prop today - the broken and nicely worn keyboard from an old piano. It is already sepia in tone. It made me so happy I nearly went nuts! Made up for the DQ. |
