I'm looking to buy a photo printer. I'm not looking to print anything large and it's just for personal use. Any recommendations? Budget will probably be around $500 or less. I did some research a while back but seem to have lost what I had gathered. If anybody has links to very recent printer comparisions that would be greatly appreciated.

Woo Hoo the Epson VS. Canon debate! LOL
Well my man I am in the Epson Camp and have been forever, not to say anything bad at all about Canon though.
I have the R1800 and love it. It does everything I could possibly need. I can print snapshots to 13x44 panos from roll paper. I printed for Deb a B&W 13x19 and it looked FANTASTIC. Ask her what she thinks of the print. :-)
It's suggested retail is $549 but I bet you can get it on sale some place. I know that eschlar did some exhaustive research in a thread around here about the Canon and Epson I will look for that. |

In that price range I have been using the Canon i9900 (now replaced with the PIXMA Pro9500) and love it. It is also a 13 x 19 printer. The only reason I went with Canon over Epson was the debate about the Epson clogging if not used frequently. I have not used the Epson but have read many complaints about that issue. As for the Canon I use it infrequently and have never had any clogging issues. I also own a Canon i960, the baby brother of the i9900, which only prints at 8.5 x 11. No clogging on it either.
Good luck in your search.

I was looking at the R1800. CNet gave it very high marks but mentioned a slight color cast when printing black and whites, which is what I probably would print mostly. I don't suppose there's one that prints incredible b/w's and reasonably well color?

I see no color cast on my B&W prints but from what I have read the Canon has the edge on the B&W but I have yet to see a side by side, in my hand comparison. |

Do you do much b/w work with either of those and if so how is it?

Amen to that; have both Epson and Canon--print quality essentially the same; Epson makes you make a lot of choices in the print options compared to Canon but the Canon results are at least the equal to the Epson, without all the options. Absolutely no clogging with the Canon--must use the Epson at least every other day. When clogged, a lot of ink gets wasted when cleaning. I definitely lean towards the Canon now. |

I use the i9100 (older version of the i9900) and I can't get it to stop with the ole banding issue Canon's are known for. It's so damn annoying, my next printer will be an Epson.

Sorry to hear of your clogging problems, maybe a defective sample. I have been using Epson since my 3000. At work I have a 2200 and home my R1800 and have never had a clogging issue. As I stated earlier I maybe use my 1800 once a week. |

I have an i9900 and before that a s900. Never experienced banding, clogging, fading, or any of the problems Canon's are "known" for. |

Hmmm. Looks like Waz is on an Epson island all by himself. :P Any more Epson backers? Btw, is there anything I should know about the Canon cartridges? Are they like Epson (separate color cartridges, archival, etc)

I love Epson when it works, but clogging has been a b**ch in my old little Epson 780, and yesterday I had to do my first cleaning (actually, two) on my spanking new Epson R2400 after about 3 days without printing on it. I thought they had solved this issue, but apparently, not yet :(.

I have a 1800 and 2400 and yes they simply rock (if they are not clogged) I do make customer images on the 2400 and am very happy with the results |

If you're looking for a great b/w printer, I have an old HP Laserjet 4 I can sell ya. :-)
Seriously though, somebody had posted yesterday about a deal for a Canon Pixma I6600 for $99 which is real cheap for that printer. I can't find it right now though. |
