That's great and all. But it does nothing to help make your images more archival or the RAW data more accessible.

I posed the question of "legality" for challenges on Thursday and still waiting to hear. (My real computer and all it's software are in the shop!) If I get an answer, I'll post.
The most recent Beta of Adobe Lightroom is 4.1
If you have an older version, may be why some are having issues. New version in nice (and quick). |

I actively use 3 separate raw converters:
1) Raw Shooter Premium has been my main-stay for awhile. It is still, by far, the fastest converter out there. And when I'm in a hurry processing pictures in between the wedding and reception, nothing beats it.
2) Adobe Lightroom has some really nice image enhancement tools. I'm impressed with what I'm able to do with it. It's not as fast as RSP, but I can get more impressive results. I'm hoping that the final release of Lightroom will be optimized to the point that it is fast enough to make me give up RSP.
3) DxO is the only converter I'll use for my high end (16x20 and larger) images (and sometimes my 11x14's as well). It costs a bit, especially if you own a professional camera (and they consider the Canon 5D to be professional), but the quality of what I get out of DxO is amazing. DxO is customized for each camera and lens combination and manages to get rid of optical issues like spherical distortion, chromatic distortion, etc. But of the three, DxO is the real CPU cruncher. Even their new 4.0 version, which is supposed to be so much faster, still eats my brand new Core 2 Duo 6600 for lunch. So the only images DxO ever touches are the ones that I want the very best quality on and can afford the time to get it.

a hunch tells me that's their plan. i'll try the full version when released if it won't corrupt my RSP usage.

Unfortunately! I was using RSP and was pretty happy - there were things that needed to be fixed including colour issues but it was the best fit for what I wanted. LR is serious bloatware [don't take this lightly!], it's as slow as a pig (even the "beta 4" for win which was a big step forward in speed from the early versions). Sure, it's fine for a couple of images but load in 15K and see what happens.
My main issues are around not been able to get anything out of it without hitting a hundred buttons and having to import everything before you can do something useful. The controls in B4 are reasonable and the output is pretty good. It badly need an output module or to update the print module to generate files in multiple queues (like Bibble).
I get it free and am doubtful I will use it, so I certainly would not pay anything for it - at least based on the latest "beta". Maybe in a few releases it might be useful, although the Adobe my way or the highway might make it unusable for some anyway.

If anyone cares, SC said Adobe Lightroom is legal IF you don't use the lens correction area! :) COOL! |

i just went to a lecture about lightroom. it sounds like it will be awesome once they get all the bugs out. i heard it is supposed to be released sometime in December or January. I think it is definitely worth the money if you have a lot of photos to organize. |

The batch export features don't do what you need ? It takes me about 3 key presses and one dialog box to batch process hundreds of images.
The way it is currently architected there is plenty of scope for additional third-party plug-ins to handle additional output and printing options. It looks like that's the plan going forward anyway.

well lets hope they improve the speed then. I think if i have lots of photos to organize that is where lightroom fails in the largest way.
If i have 10,000 images in the library, and then click to show only 2 star images.. it goes through EVERY folder and figures out which are the 2 star images... that takes a very long time. I currently am using it with just a few of my images (perhaps a couple thousand) and it is slow (slower than normal that is) when i try change which images to show. :(

Just downloaded Lightroom, and I'm blown away. I like it very, very much.

No, not by a long way. They have a "print" module, so why no output module with some useful functions? The web output is too basic to be of much help either.
Even if they addressed those issue - and they have no interest in that for the first cut from what I see on both the Adobe and Pixmantec boards, the thing is still FAR TO SLOW to be useful for anything.

Has anyone heard how much this is going to cost when its released? Hopefully closer to Elements the CS2 or 3
That would be a big factor for me.

I do my processing in AL, but I resize and save for web in PS. The pain is that every time I want to rework on an image, I have to import it and do all the steps all over again, because it takes ages for AL to load the image. And, to make it work faster, I work in one image at a time. But still, it´s worth, because it´s a beauty. (anyhow, I don´t work in more than one image a day, so...I can afford to take it easy, I guess...) |

That's interesting since those who purchased RAW Shooter Premium prior to July 2006 get the first full release of Lightroom as a free upgrade.
