Did I miss this or is it new? Seems the price dropped $350 US for the D200. See here:

Nikon D200 Body Only - $1,350

Bastards. Two weeks after I got mine. Bastards.

Yeah - it's now tempting to make the upgrade. I so want corded remote, mirror lock up and 100 ISO and being able to see the ISO setting in the viewfinder.

But alas, Christmas is coming and I cna't spring for it now.

400 quid less than I paid for mine too but hey... things dr4op its a fact of life... bad timing for you AL 2 weeks... ouch!
12/12/2006 01:49:02 PM · #5
I got mine last week as well. I have noticed:

1. The metering and exposure control is 100x better than the D70.

2. Looking thru viewfinder and at LCD screen is way better/bigger.

3. Perhaps it is my new lens (17-55 2.8), but I say the quality of the shot just looks so much cleaner/true. I look at images hours everyday, so I kinda know what I am talking about. The D200 was certainly the right move for me.

Alfresco - if you bought it from B&H or one of the outfits offering at this price it might be worth a call to them. You can never tell and nothing to lose.

Maybe a price drop before a new model?
Maybe the D3x?
12/12/2006 02:09:18 PM · #8
I thought about that. Most likely not the D3x but an upgrade to the D200, maybe D300. The D200 was introduced (I think) Nov 2005 so figuring an 18 month upgrade cycle that could put the D300 up in the next six months.

Don't expect a D200 upgrade anytime soon. Yeah, maybe a D200S with a new menu and minor tweaks and new processing software + a D200 firmware upgrade to add the same functionality to the D200. But I doubt it.
Forget about that 18 month upgrade cycle. Look up how long it took Nikon to replace the D100 with the D200.

Next camera to replace is the D2h and after that the D2x(S).
There might be a small chance that they have a kind of 5D body along with it (with 35mm sensor yes, just like the D3x will have).

I agree that the D3x is due but look at what they have done lately. A D80, D50 and then quickly followed by a D40. I think they are speeding up their cycle to compete with Canon. The pro camera are likely next and that includes the D200.

Time will tell.

looks like their price of d80 dropped a bit too (not too much though). What to do: d80 or d200?... Weight and a wireless remote are two things I prefer in d80... (and the price :)).

so do I need to take back my christmas wish: d200? :)

I am using the battery grip and really don't feel like it is too heavy. Honestly.

Thanks for the news. B&H has one less D200 to sell now, and within a few days, I'll have an extra D70 to sell.

Congrats Becky, welcome to the D200 fold! Get an extra battery or two as the D200 likes to go through them at an alarming rate.

I use the battery grip too and find it very useful.

Over here the D2X has done a big drop off the price. I guess that stores that have them to sell want to discard them before the D2Xs came in.

The price about 6 month ago was over 5000 euros and now I've seen it at 3000! Just making me think about the upgrade... Not for the D200 but for this.

I'm glad you brought this up as it's something I'm struggling with. I've been wanting a D200, but now I look at the D80 and I wonder if that isn't a better option for me. It's certainly cheaper and it has many of the same features as the D200. I've looked at some side by side comparisons, but I don't think they are comprehensive.

What does the D200 have that makes it worth so much more than the D80? I've seen that the burst frames per second is higher in the D200 (5 fps vs. 3 fps), but what else? I think the D200 has mirror lock up, but I haven't seen whether the D80 does or not (I suspect not). Anyone know?

Yes the D80 has mirror lockup/delay "exposure delay" mode which is a 400ms delay for shutter release after mirror up. It's not quite a true mirror lockup but it works. The D200 has a magnesium body and the D80 is polymer. Yes the wireless remote is only $19 for the D80. I like mine very much and have found it to do all that I need but the beefy D200 is a hell of a machine as well.

Good idea - message sent to B&H, I'll update as they update ... just in case anyone else is in the same situation.

So, I guess build quality accounts for some of the cost then. As for the remote, I have one for my D70 and it looks like it will work with the D80 whereas it would not with the D200. OTH, my CF cards would work with the D200 but not with the D80. Decisions, decisions.... I guess with the money I would save with the D80, I could afford the SD cards.
12/12/2006 03:52:34 PM · #21
Yup same remote as the D70. I am liking the SD cards more and more for 2 reasons. Smaller and no pins. As the good Doc. Achoo can attest bending a pin is no fun on the wallet.

if you go to B&H's site and type "psnov" into the search box, the D200 comes back at just $1299.

don't tell me my wallet didn't look really really juicy earlier today.

I've been thinking of upgrading to a 30D, but from reviews etc, i'm only very slightly now considering selling up and buying one of these.

Exactly what i`ve done, and very happy with my D80.

It's just i'm not so comfortable with Canon, base knowledge of the lenses, etc.
Definately food for thought though.
