So I've decided to start using Firefox 2.0 for my DPC browsing, but I've discovered an annoyance. Using IE, I can click on a thread, read it, and click the back button to return to the home page, and the thread now has the gray folder icon indicating that I've read it. When I go back in Firefox, the thread read/unread status does not change.

I would assume this occurs because IE refreshes the page automatically when I go back, and Firefox does not. If this is the case, is there a way to tell Firefox to refresh when I go back? If this occurs for some other reason can anyone tell me how to change it?

I don't have the same problem but I would assume it is something in the settings. After lunch I will go through my settings and see if I can find which one may affect this.

It is because firefox doesn't refresh the page when you hit back. I, personally, have left it there so I can catch those fast moving threads that sometimes come up. I'm sure there's a setting for that, hold on I'll dig through it.

Edit to add: Ok maybe there isn't a way to change it or I couldn't find one at least, sorry. Anyone else want to give it a go?

It is more of a server side thing from what I understand.

The pages are marked as no-cache which IE takes to mean must be reloaded on back, but firefox does not (by design)

Firefox uses no-store to differentiate pages that shouldn't be cached on a reload, vs pages that shouldn't be cached on a back.

So the site would need to send no-store & no-cache

IE treats both pragmas the same way and reloads all the time. A safer but less efficient way to go.

Those of you who said you don't have the same problem, if you're in the middle of the page and you click a link and then go back, does it position you where you were before or take you to the top of the page? I suspect that you could remedy the caching issue via about:config but if it doesn't cache, I would think it would put you back up at the top of the page. Annoying when you're browsing a page full of thumbnails. I've not tested this because I prefer it take me back to my original spot than reload on the back click. I just click the dpchallenge logo to reload when I need to.

I use firefox1.5 and the page doesn't refresh using "Back" but it does if I click on "home" at the bottom of the page...a bit annoying, I agree.

I went through the about:config documentation and there isn't really a good answer on the client side, short of disabling caching. I suppose it could be fixed quickly with a bit of greasemonkey to change the cache pragmas to add a no-store. The problem is the caching settings sent from the site - they are treated differently in Firefox & IE. Langdon could fix it quite quickly but the rest of us are SOL.

Even changing the re-check frequency for page content changes doesn't work, because we aren't visiting the page 'again' in a new sense in firefox, we are going back to it. IE, treats it like a new view, firefox treats it like going back to an old view.

FWIW, I actually LIKE this aspect of Firefox and wouldn't change it even if I knew how. It allows me, for example, to view the thumbnails of a challenge, scroll them, click on on to check it out, hit the back button, and still be centered on the same place in the thumbnails page. If I want the original page refreshed, a quick tap of F5 does it very nicely :-)

Interesting stuff so far, all. Thanks for taking the time. This has really got me wondering how IE does what it does. If I click on a thread, then hit back, it knows what thread I just read and grays the icon. It also takes me back to where I was on the page. Also, if I'm on a big ol' page of thumbs and click one, then click back, it knows where I was on the page and takes me right back there. It leaves me at that point on the page even if I do a refresh (F5).

Firefox 2.0 behaves exactly the same way in all respects as IE except it does not gray the just-read-thread icon (unless I do a refresh).

A little bump in case anyone has any more ideas...

If you are looking at thumbnails for a challenge and your mouse has the scroll wheel, you can click the scroll wheel on a link or thumbnail and it will open that window in a new tab and not a new window, which can really keep things neat on your screen. I go through challenges and click on a bunch of images, then close each tab after viewing and I am right where I left off. Doesn't help with your issue really, but it is one of the things I like most about firefox.

Really depends on how your mouse is set up. Middle click is more often used to Autoscroll.

I use FF 2.0 at home, and I get the grey folders for read threads (and old >1 hour). It uses goes back to where I was if I refresh a page.

Glad I read this thread as I was using 1.5 still. For some reason Firefox didn't automatically notify me of the 2.0 version.

Saweeeeeettttttttt....

hmm, I changed nothing about the settings for my mouse, if I roll the wheel it scrolls up and down the page, so is that autoscroll? It also opens new tabs with a click on a link, FWIW. Its a standard optical dell mouse.

Rolling the mouse wheel to go up and down is just scrolling. Autoscrolling is clicking once with the wheel button and moving the mouse up and down to scroll the page. Clicking the mouse button again disengages autoscrolling. However, I see you are correct now that I've reset everything back to default. The standard behavior when not on a link is autoscroll and the default behavior when on a link is to follow it. It's been awhile since I've had things setup this way. My preference is for it to be set to magnify.
