I'm from the North coast - but you wont get time to get up there. It is interesting to compare Melbourne and Sydney - they are very different cities. But - in the time frame you mentioned I wouldn't bother. Spend your 4 weeks (while your wife is working) crawling through the bowls of the city. Maybe for the 7 days you have, hire a small car and see Victoria. Victoria is our smallest state (not counting Tasmania) so you can get around it reasonably easily. From Melbourne to the NSW border you can do in a few hours. There is also a fair bit to see and do in that area (even vineyards). You will get to see one area easily and comfortably. Go outside of Victorian and the distances become hugh. Even by plane - you don't want to be wasting time in airports/ transit/ flight etc. Better to see one area with a bit detail then lots as you rush by. Come back another time and check one of the other areas.
Just remember tho - Melbourne/Victoria is just one part of Australia. We don't the accent/ regional differences that you have in the states - but the other parts are a very different Australia. Sydney is different to Melbourne. Darwin, Perth,Alice springs, Broken Hill different again.
Food prices I think would be on par to the states. Avoid the tourist areas - they know how to charge like a wounded bull. And yes - become an honourary Canadian (they'll think you are poorer and not charge as much LOL )
While you are here - try a Hunter Valley wine.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the info. Hell. Forget justifying the trip. I going and I'll figure out how I'm paying for it!
There was mention of Tasmanian wildlife. How would I get from Melbourne to Tasmania? Is that one of the ferries I saw on the map or is it a plane ride? |

You can do either boat or plane. The boat is probably cheaper but I've only ever flown. Frecynet peninsula/ wineglass bay is beautiful. I haven't been to cradle mtn but I would love to get there too. There seemed to be tons to photograph there, I only had a couple of days though :(
Uluru would be a several day trip from Melbourne and quite expensive. I've never made it out there on several trips to Victoria & SA, mainly because of the time required to go and the cost.

Victoria is actually a pretty good place to be for Pinot Noir. Wineries in the Mornington Peninsula in particular seem to specialize in that grape. Stonier is one of my favorites. Also a very pretty winery. A few others worth either visiting or tasting (I haven't been to all of these) are 10 minutes by tractor, Stumpy Gully, Willow Creek, Red Hill Estate and Paringa Estate
There are also some Yarra Valley Wineries that produce great Pinot. Coldstream Hills and Yarra Burn spring to mind.
Your best bet would be finding a Wine Tour for the area. As you can see from the link there are a few options...

As Gordon says, Fly or the Cat either way.... Try the fly/drive packages as they can sometimes be great value and you need transport in tassi (we did that years ago now). I would personally vote for the west coast - cradle mountain, dove lake e.t.c. The east coast is nice but try and get into the mountains and some of the national parks on the west coast.
There are serious wineries around that area - if you want something fun, try the Ned Kelly area (google Glenrowan or Ned Kelly) also the old gold towns are pretty cool (Bendigo and Ballarat type direction). If you are in that area; don't forget my fav winery Brown Brothers but take a driver :-).

Great - have the camera ready for the harbour and the opera house, then go somewhere more interesting. Even Sydney's hinterland - i.e. inland, to the west of the city - is very nice. The blue mountains, some neat caves, etc etc etc. |
His wife may want to stop in at the Victoria Building. |
She's not much into shopping, but that building is an amazing piece of architecture. |

_eug I seriously wouldnt leave Victoria just to see any one thing eg. beach, forest, wildlife, architecture etc because Victoria has it all. I agree with tajhad you are much better enjoying one part of the country rather than trying to see everything, Heck im still discovering melbourne/Victoria and ive been here for 26 years :)

That is a great price to see Uluru. I have climbed that rock twice, it's fantastic for photo opportunities and you must view the sun setting on the rock! The last time I went there was about 1991 or so and the airfare was about AU $345 return from Brisbane to Alice Springs. |

Luckily enough, you can take it flying to Australia, just not coming in to America.

Have lived equal parts of my life in all 3 mainland eastern states, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Each one is completely different and has an enormous amount to offer. Hell the coast regions are completely different to the country areas.
Born and live in Sydney at the moment and while I love this city so much, especially during summer, I have to say that given your circumstances I would probably spend the whole time in Victoria.
My favorite Victorian holidays have been:
1. Melbourne - great shops, cafes & theatres.
2. The Great Ocean Road
3. The Grampians
4. The Murray river - Wodonga thru to Mildura
5. Gippsland & the high country
Only 2 things against Vic at that time of year:
1. Weather - unpredictable at best of times
2. Bushfires
You'll have a great time no matter what:) |
