pssst... you might want to look at a map. Australia is the size of the continental US. ;oP |
Well, duh! lol ;) |
Dude you would be surprised how easily people think they can get around this place. My friend had family over and they wanted to drive to the Gold Coast and back for the weekend. |

Did you say you are taking 7 days for travelling or 7 weeks? ;o) |
I have 5 weeks. The wife works for 4 of those weeks. I'll stay mostly on the eastern coast. |

This never ceases to amaze me - why does everyone see Sydney as THE place to go? Folks, believe it or not, there is more to Australia than Sydney.
Sydney is just another big city, and overall not a particularly beautiful one at that. Borrow someone else's photo of the bridge and the opera house, then go and look at a bunch of other stuff, instead!
Eug, you have VERY little time - you'll be busy enough around Melbourne. Perhaps take in Adelaide or Tasmania, but don't try and see it all - you can NOT do it in that short time.
(by the way, I'm a Brisbane girl and I HAVE been to Melbourne and Sydney, too). |

Hey, I will be in Melbourne for 5 to 7 days in the early part of February, proberly around the 6th February, before we have to go up to Sydney for two to three months, for medical treatment for Peter.
If we can't catch up in Melbourne, hopefully Sydney is the second option if you plan to visit Sydney as I think it definately has some excellent photo opportunities for anyone to photograph.
I love to get the chance to see and meet you, as that would be just great. Let us know what you are doing and you never know we may be able to catch up.....
I live in Queensland, on the Sunshine Coast, an hour away from Brisbane.
Just let us know if we can get to see you, as we would love that.

Great - have the camera ready for the harbour and the opera house, then go somewhere more interesting. Even Sydney's hinterland - i.e. inland, to the west of the city - is very nice. The blue mountains, some neat caves, etc etc etc. |

Either that or just bring pawdrix along with you he's got a kinda shrek/toxic avenger look going on at the moment, which may scare off the local thugs a bit. |

You said you might be flying through Sydney. I am moving from South Africa to Melbourne in Jan and have done a couple of exploratory trips in the past year. One thing you may be able to benefit from is "free" flight from Sydney to Melbourne. I was quoted the same price to go to either city. So I bought a flight to Melbourne, which had to go via Sydney anyway, stayed there for a few days and carried on to Melbourne and then went home via Sydney again. It's worth asking about.

Melbourne is a great city to visit - or live. If it wasn't for the fact that most of my friends and family are in Sydney, I could quite happily live in Melbourne.
Melbourne has an excellent public transport system, centred around the trams. Sydney has a lousy public transport system. Both have good nightlife. Melbourne is the comedy centre of Australia and has lots of arts type activities too.
Other than the ideas already mentioned, you could also head into the Grampians (in central Victoria) for a long weekend (remember: drive on the left side of the road!), or Geelong (start of the Great Ocean Road).
If you go only to Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), then two days is minimum, 3-4 would be better. If you want to get to Kings Canyon, Alice Springs or further afield in central Australia, add several more days. Last year I spent 6 days/7 nights in KingsCanyon-Uluru and felt a little rushed. Accommodation at Uluru is hideously expensive - youth hostel starts at about A$35 per night, and the cheapest hotel there is about A$300 per night (don't ask how much the most expensive one is!). Food is expensive there too - partly supply/demand factors, partly the fact that it is so far from everywhere.
If you are a professional photographer visiting Uluru then you MUST contact the Visitors Centre (google Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park) in advance to get clearance plus information on the restrictions (certain areas containing sacred sites are not allowed to be photographed). If you are not a professional but may exhibit, you should contact the centre in advance or while you are there. The people dealing with photographers are very friendly and helpful not antagonistic, but it's worth knowing about the restrictions so as not to cause problems with/for the traditional owners. I chose to abide by the professional restrictions which are tighter than for amateurs, but this didn't stop me from enjoying the site both visually and photographically. |

Well, you can get a tent for $1800 a night for a couple, but with a two night stay minimum it'll cost you $3600 for a weekend.
