LOL.

Oh, you can take outdoor nice-weather shots ... just not of *water*. :-> There's plenty of outdoor liquids that aren't water.

I understand it is frustrating when we see someone else shouting our "original" idea into the public, but the fact remains that we are not the only person who have thought of the idea in the first place, because the person who posted the idea may have thought of the idea earlier than we have! I personally think that, even if there are 50 photographers shooting a same model, the output would be different. Some may produce similar photos, but that only means they are not being creative enough. We should always try to develope our own identity and style, making our photo and work stand out from the rest. I'm not there yet, but at least I'm trying.

Sorry for voicing my opinion but I dont think its fair to start listing all the possibilities for a challenge before anyone's had a chance to think it up themselves. I have a clever idea for liquid and I wouldn't want someone to accidentally reveal my idea in a list of possibilities for the challenge.

Wow, there's already one submission to the Liquid challenge. Some people are pretty quick!

Well, someone has already posted one of my ideas here. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
05/28/2003 11:34:27 AM · #32
it is frustrating to see an idea you thought of posted in the forums, but I'd rather know that 5 other people thought of it than think myself very clever, do the shot, submit it, and then see it done by half a dozen others who were clearly as clever as me!

I see where you're coming from, BigSmiles, I didn't submit a matrix shot for this very reason, but I don't feel disappointed by it after all, I was glad not to have done something that I only thought was original but actually wasn't.

While i do feel that every image on dpc has stemmed from someone else's idea or something else, I am disappointed that you ganged up on me the way that you did. I have removed my previous post.

Dear BigSmiles..... please put on a Big Smile and enjoy the real mission of this site: to become a better photographer. So even if I would add stuf like:

tears
spit
javex
alcohol
sulfuric acid

there are 20 more that I could also add.... I think this site is more about sharing ideas then hiding them. :oD

PS: please DO NOT use sulfuric acid uless you are a professional!! LOL

To add to kkreeper's list:

Oil
Blood
Urine
Oozing Wounds
Snot
Sweat
Sperm

Paganini, it may be advisable if you were not to leave comments on most of such submissions, lol.

In my mind, stuff like coffee, tea, insecticides are out since they are substantially water. Fruit juice is okay if 100% pure fruit; if it's that reconstituted frozen stuff which you make liquid by adding water to it, it's OUT. I demand that every title lists exactly the ingredients so that we can determine that there's no water content :)

Am not so sure alcohol is without water. Wine, cognac, etc may be okay
but things like beer contain water, yes? Could someone post some insights on alcohol please.

Actually all booze consists mostly of water. Even the really heavy stuff is, percentage wise, mostly water.

Beer consists of 95% water (give or take a percent or two according to brand)
The water content in brandy, whiskey, cognac, rum, etc. can range from 80% to 50%.
Even 100% pure fruit juice is actually a solution of salts and plant sugars in water.

I dont know if I would exclude things like coffee and things that might be made with water. Coffee isn't water. I dont wake up in the morning and crave a nice hot cup of steaming water :P

This is the way I see it. Coffee isn't water but muddy water is water as long as it isn't too thick in which case it becomes just plain mud. A marsh is water even if it's dirty. Clear liquids aren't always water, but in order to get that point across I suggest to the photographers to use a prop or a part of the image that would clarify that. Sweat isn't water even though it contains it. IMO if adding water to something gives it a new name then it's ok. i.e. water + dirt = dirty 'water'. Therefore dirty water is water. If you add water to fruit crystals it becomes juice/freshie not fruity water :P Get it?

Feel free to post exceptions or additions

I'm trying to raise some funds for my challenge topic. I will be shooting female oil, mud, and jello wrestling and do a triptych. I am reaching out to my fellow DPCers for donations. I figure the whole thing will cost me approx. $500. Donations of $50 or more will get front row seats. I'm also looking for "wrestlers". I already have a candidate ... she's a DPCer. I already turned down offers form Bamaster, Kiwiness and Setzler. Sorry guys ... female wrestlers only.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Jell-O doesn't count as a liquid. I'll be voting it a 1 for that. ;)

It seems to me that only 'water' is water and anything else that happens to contain water is not water. Just because a beer contains water doesn't disqualify it from this challenge because it is beer and not water. Make sense? Now with that in mind, I think this will be as much about what the liquid appears like in the photo as much as what it actually is. For example: you could set up a shot where you were spilling white wine from a wine glass but the wine could really just as well be water. You would likely get voted down by many voters and it wouldn't be a very strong example of a non-water liquid. You could be strictly adherring to the rules but still be missing the point. In my opinion, of course.

Totally agree!!!

timj, i was merely joking; unfortunately, there are voters who score pictures on exactly such narrow criteria and some of those would label themselves open-minded.

I'll be taking nude shots for this challenge since humans are composed of around 80% water!!! :oP

I think if we limited ourselves to liquids that contain no water, we'd be looking at a lot of pictures of mercury, magma (if you don't live in Michigan) and a few other things considered liquid, most of which I can't think of at the moment. I'm sure I'll be doing a picture of fresh hot magma... as soon as the earth busts open and spills a little out, if I remember my camera that is....

Well, then, it wasn't just "your" idea, was it?

Geez, people, take a pill. You may think your idea is completely unique and no one would ever think of it by you, but chances are, you're wrong. And if someone else posted the idea here, you already ARE. So what difference does it make?

I have my check ready for Jacko's photo shoot!
