Dear collegues.

this few photos are frm a private collection for a personal project, that I hope to put in an exposition next year.

Please give me your sincere comments, regarding the quality of the shoots, lightning, composition and if you find the images offensive. The work is regarding the beauty of the pregnant woman.

theres the photos:

I like 1 and 4 the best but I think they would be better with no underwear.

Kudos to you and your model. Maternity photography is a field I have recently gotten very interested in. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination so please take my comments with a grain of salt. With that said... My $0.02 USD.

(l-r)

1.) I like the pose and composition, but the wrinkled not-so-black background is a minor distraction for me. I am normally a fan of black and white photography for maternity images, but this one works for me in color.

2.) I don't like this one as much as the first although it is a similar image. The pose does not seem as comfortable and the lighting seems a little flat for a black and white image.

3.) I think you're trying to accomplish too much in this image. I like the idea of using the reflection, but the effect is lost when coupled with the black background she's laying on. It might have been better to have the black drape set back farther from the model and to just have her laying on the reflective surface. The reflection is also chopped off on the bottom of the frame. Again the lighting seems a little flat, but the pose is nice. The underwear is a bit of a distraction as it draws the eye away from your focus. This could be eliminated by either shooting without the underwear, cloning out the underwear, or by using some sort of fabric drape with a slightly modified pose.

4.) This one truly shows the pregnancy and for that reason is one of my favorites. However, her feet are chopped off and she just plain looks uncomfortable. The lighting is better though. Small wrinkles in the background could be cloned out for a cleaner look.

5.) Interesting image of a beautiful model. It's a nice headshot, but does not fit with the other images.

Overall impression: You've got some good images that with some minor tweaking could be punched up quite a bit. You have a beautiful model and the two of you should be very proud of some very beautiful images.

Great work, I would like to see more of your project. Keep us posted!!!

#4 is really nice. All of them would look better if she lost the underwear.

I like the first 3 but esp 2 and 3 as with the B/W the lighting to me looks nice and fairly natural, maby a touch more contrast but thats just my thoughts. I do agree though with slickchik about the underwear, it seems a little over powering to me. maby its because they are such a high contrast to the models skin tone...

While I feel that you've got a good start, there are a few issues which really stand out here.

#1 is the lighting. You've got a very flat and unappealing feel to most of the examples here (with the extreme opposite case in the 5th). This is further unhelped by the prominence of the background, which is easily visible and distracting.

I've taken a moment to find a couple of examples of where lighting was used to good effect in photos such as these:

and

These effectively show how stronger, more contrasty lighting can enhance the curves of your model and give us more of a striking image to view.
Something to think on anyway.

As for composition and such, I like where you're going with the posing, but again.. those darned backgrounds. Having a full figure is, of course, just one way of presenting the nude maternity model, but if you're going to choose it, you'll want to have her stand out as much as possible, and remove distracting elements (or try to work with your elements in order to enhance the model). Two examples from an old master, Heida:

and

Show us that we don't have to have a stark black (or white), background.. but we do need to think about the way we're incorporating the elements that are there. A general rule of thumb is that wrinkles or folds in background material is a no-no. (Although I have seen very effective breakings of this rule).

Now, having said all that, I feel that not all is lost. A little work in post to bring out those natural contrasts and curves and dampen the distracting elements could do a lot for these photos. Also, some creative cropping could really help as well. I also agree that the underwear is distracting, but you work with the comfort level of your model on that one.

Anyway, it all comes down to whether or not the client is happy in the end, but it's always good to learn and try to improve as you go.. so I hope I've said something that can help. Study other photographers, their methods, and advice, and strive for the best product possible. You've got a good start. Good luck in the future, and don't be shy with future examples.

IMO, the shots try to mimick pin-up poses and really don't work for a maternity shoot.
