I was contacted last week by one of the local colleges to shoot their sporting events. I had shot their vollyball team to sell pics to the athletes but the sports director liked the shots so much he wants to hire me for other events. This will be my first real big job, however I'm not sure what to charge them. Does anybody have any advise? Keep in mind they have about 21 different programs.

I have a couple friends who do this locally...

Neither of them actually charge the schools they work for. They give images to the school in exchange for the opportunity to sell photos back to the players. If you are charging the school to shoot the event and then selling those images to the players, you have a bit of a conflict of interest going on. Some call it 'double dipping.' If you can get away with double dipping, you are gonna make good money... lol...

Let me explain this a little more clearly, the first shoot i did was for selling to the athletes, however the school will be using those for free. I didn't do that shoot for the school it was for me. Now the athletic director wants to hire me for other sporting events, I will not be selling these to the athletes. You're right , thats double dipping and i feel that to be unethical. I'm just looking for a ballpark figure to go into the meeting I have.

Not sure if this will help you at all, but here goes. We do video work for a school filming the rugby games, then doing some analyzing and stats of the games. We usually do 4 to 6 games on a Saturday. Keep in mind your traveling costs, your time, wear and tear to equipment, etc.

We charged around R1000.00 a day depending on the traveling involved. The arrangement we had was that if anyone wanted copies of the DVD's we would charge each person as they ordered. If you are selling your pictures to the school for their exclusive use, then I suggest you price it quite high as you may loose the rights to the pictures and if say Sports Illustrated decides to publish a photo you might have no right to royalties from it.

Sorry i can't be more specific than that, hope it helped a bit.

almost all colleges have some mechanism to allow parents to buy action photos of their athletes. if the school has its own photography department, then the school itself will handle the transactions. on the other hand, most schools hire freelancers to cover their events, and because they can't afford to pay much, they typically allow the photogs to sell to the parents. i know some people where this is the business model they use to negotiate contracts worth 10s of 1000s of dollars.

the only thing i've encountered that gives me pause is when the photog actively tries to sell to both teams... if i was an AD, i'd be hesitant to credential a shooter who was going to shoot the other team on my dime. unfortunately, some schools's budgets are so tight, they have to put up with this kind of crap.
