Does anyone know if it is possible to create the sabattier effect using image editing software, speciffically with PhotoImpact? |

I'm not sure about PhotoImpact but there are several methods in Photoshop, two of which I know.
1) Make another layer of your image and set that layer's mode to "Exclusion". You can then use levels and curves to adjust the image to taste.
2) Apply a U-shaped type curve to the whole image. This effect may even cause the mackie lines that the traditional darkroom technique produces...
Credit to Tom Ang's Digital Photographer Handbook where I read about the above techniques. |

Here is one I entered using the techniques described in Tom Ang's book. The details field explains how it was achieved.
The only photoshop processing was the apply a V shaped curve to the combined RGB channel. Nothing else, other than resize/ sharpen.
It was a shot taken of christmas lights, long exposure, on a tripod and zooming the lens through the exposure to create the light trails.
This shows another image from the same shoot showing how they looked before the fake sabattier processing
