If you're like me, you're not really sure what you're supposed to do with your lens hood. I just read this Excellent Article on Lens Hoods. Gosh, I guess I really should be using mine. :)

Thanks for the link :)
I'm thinking about getting a 7i after the summer, and I've been wondering if the hood really makes any difference. After reading this, I think it's more likely that I will try it.

And just remember - a lens hood is only 95% effective in preventing unwanted flare - so be careful out there, kids! :_D

I'd love to get the Sony one, but it's rediculously expensive ($100 CDN). I can't really justify that for a piece of plastic.

Take out stock in Olympus, and pay yourself back with future purchases :P

Jimmythe Fish,

I found a nice rubber collapsible 58mm lens hood at the Ritz Camera website for $5.99 US. I have just purchased it and am beginning to use it on my F717. I believe it will do fine.

Thanks, RLS. It looks like a good deal for the price. I did find the lens hood for $80 CDN (~$50 US) at www.henrys.com for anyone jonesing for the Sony one at a cheaper price. Prolly would be the same after shipping, though ;). For me, still too much...

Does Sony have a proprietary lens (thread) size? I would think you find out how big in mm and get one to fit that. I got (after I recieved my adapter) a 52mm rubber lens hood at closout ($3) at //www.filterhouse.com

Be careful RLS. I got that same collapsible lens hood and have, unfortunately, dicovered that when it is extended it cuts off the corners at full wide angle. It is very easy to miss when previewing a shot. I am probably going to break down and try to get Sony's lens hood instead. It's shape allows for more precision in preventing lens flare.

dangit... if I got a lens hood then I'd have no use for my friends and family. What am I gonna do if I'm not carefully placing them, hands in the air, to block the sun? just let them stand around and feel useless while I take pictures of anything and everything?
