We talked to a vet today and they told us we have to bathe and comb them all each day. That was quite a trying adventure. Evey, the mom, wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. She tried to walk away a few times but never one used her teeth or claws against us. She just kind of meowed softly and looked at us sadly as we soaped her up. She didn't even hiss. We had a hard time drying her though because all we could use was towels, she's already terrified of my hairdryer.

The kittens were very scared and I felt horrible making them like that. We ended up not washing them because we wimped out and just combed them with warm water instead and dried them off. While we were doing this Evey was standing around making sure everything was okay. She didn't try to take them away this time either.

We put new bedding in the carrier we bought for them today to take them to the vets on Monday. They are all currently lying in there feeding and Evey is licking them dry.

We have to do this everyday until they can use treatments, which will be 5 weeks from now.

I have lot of experience working with flea infested animals. I spent several years as a technician at an emergency animal clinich and many more as a receptionist and surgery technician and a groomer. One of the biggest threats from flea infestations is anemia and transmitting other parasites such as tapeworms.

In the past, I have successfully used Advantage on the Momma cat to control the fleas and their eggs. Advantage is not labeled for use on newborn kittens, but it is mild enough to do so. Dawn dish soap is also very mild and kills fleas. They use it to clean wildlife that are affected by oil spills. You probably don't need to bathe the babies so much every day as you would want to comb through them with a flea comb. A very safe flea spray is Adam's flea spray you can get at the Veterinarian. Rather than spraying it directly on the kittens, spray it on a towel and wrap the kitten in them. The will at least subdue the flea good enough for you to comb out. Adam's could also be used on the Momma Cat in stead of a dose of Advantage.

The most successful route I have taken is the Advantage. I have used on kittens once their eyes opened and it requires a small amounth of Advantage rather than a whole tube.

Hi there, just thought I would post a little update on the family.

We took them all to the vet today and have been told all the kittens and mom are in great condition. They gave us Revolution to treat Evey with for the fleas and a spray we can use on carpets, drapes etc in rooms the kittens aren't in yet.

I'm very relieved to say that everyone is happy and healthy.
:D

Edit: And their eyes opened and they are a lovely royal blue for the time being, absolutely gorgeous.

Many of the flea treatments are neurotoxins and often will be lippid bourne so a safe dose for the adult female may concentrate in the fat rich milk, creating a dangerous dose for the kittens risking liver or kidney damage. An odd seeming suggestion from Mother earth news is to used Diatomaceous earth, a fairly harmless mineral used in gardening and swimming pool filters.

"There's only one pesticide—natural or otherwise—that's a specific for insects and completely safe. Di atomaceous earth is a type of fossilized algae that resembles chalk dust. The fine, sharp-edged particles attach themselves to and penetrate the waxy coating on a flea's shell-like exoskeleton, causing the little bloodsucker to dehydrate and die."

Here are some good ideas if you are keeping them indoors...

If you have carpet, use the vacuum regular more than twice a week in the areas that pets go regular, then afterwards seal the bag, or take the vacuume outside cause the flea's come back out.

Try this mix 3 c. diatomaceous earth (DE) for every 1/2 c. boric acid. and sprinkle around in the carpet then after 2 days, vacuume.. Careful when doing this as to not inhale the dusty powder..

Or use eight parts Borax cleaning powder to one part table salt then after a week vaccuum...
We use just salt and baking soda, sometimes freshner baking soda for carpets will help, it dries them out..

These powders arent toxic but its still not good to use if you have small children on your carpet or the young kittens but if the kittens are still in one area go for it...

All the while you need to use something on the momma, clean the areas regular change paper, beddding, boxes, ect...

If its cold outside the bugs are usually coming in to the warmth if you can start to control them right away then by the time the heat comes then you can treat your yard as well to keep them down...

The over the counter stuff beware, try something natural like this.

Warnings,, ***beware about pesticides****
I believe some of the collars or things I used contributed to my oldest cats craziness behaviors, he acts strange at times not like no other cat I have ever seen.

Hope these help, good luck..
Lets see pics of the cute kittens when you get caught up and have time...

Edit to say:
Any new pictures I'll post in the "Kittens!" thread here from now on so I don't annoy people by posting the same pictures in two threads.
