I have been using pbase for a long time as an online photo repository. What I really like about pbase is its simple structure and ease of navigation. I haven't found another site that works as well as pbase in this aspect.

After a lot of searching and testing, I have decided to move to Flickr. It's about the same price as pbase, and it has some features that I really like.

Has anyone else made a move like this from one place to another?

FYI, my work IT group blocks Flickr but not pbase. Not sure how many corporations do this but it does limit your viewers.

Why are you leaving pbase ? Have you had problems there ?

Anyway thanks for letting us know where to see your photos now !

What I liked from the introduction pages were the possibility to sent in photos by e-mail and the ability for people to leave comments while making a mark on the photo to point out what they are talking about.

Flickr is not a very marketable name in The Netherlands. In Dutch the word is pronounced as "Flikker" and that is a word used to describe gay people in a bad way. So it would sound a bit silly when you have to tell people your photopage address on the phone.

Therefore I would not move there, Pbase is good enough, never been anywhere else.
Interesting that these page developers do not have a script that you can use to copy the whole pbase structure to flickr or vice versa. I guess that they don't do that to avoid someone robbing someone else portfolio with one simple click on the button.

One of the primary things I like about Flickr is that it parses my 'file info' when I upload a photo. If I have a title and caption information in the file, which I do on everything I edit, it picks that up and uses it so I don't have to cut/paste or re-type everything after I upload it. I also like it's tagging and sets for categorization. I like the slideshow viewing on sets of photos. I like the unlimited storage... I'm sure there will be more but I just haven't been digging around enough yet...

That is a very useful feature indeed.

The one thing I enormously dislike about PBase is the limitation on storage space - I don't feel like it is a very good bang for the buck. However, $23 a year is not a lot of money (one cup of decent coffee costs about as much as a month of hosting) and the positives of the site for me really outweigh the negatives.

PBase comes up as a solid hit if someone searches on my name or certain topics that I photograph like the Richmond SPCA. I like that very much. And like you say, their gallery ordering and built-in style sheets are pretty great.

Flickr is great though - I use the free version of Flickr right now that is limited to a certain amount of bandwidth uploaded per month, I believe 20MB - but total storage is unlimited. That is pretty great for a free service. I use it for my blog images, which is plenty for that.

I am also very interested in the API for Flickr - there are some really cool things that can be done with it. So yeah, I have considered moving, and have considered it for a long time. If I ever really get off my rear and experiment more with that aspect of flickr, making some kind of custom mashup, who knows, I may join you. But myself I think I will be with PBase for a while for the reasons I stated above. I'll just keep using the free version of flickr until then.

Edit: I will say one more thing for Flickr - at only $24.95 a year i have considered getting Flickr in addition to PBase as a secondary form of backup. 2GB a month would be ample for me. The main reason I have not done that is that I need a way to reliably backup PSD and CR2 files, and Flickr would not solve that. But if all you had to backup were jpgs that would be a pretty admirable solution.

I'm also enjoying the slideshow view of different photo sets...

The GROUPS are quite intriguing as well...

I moved away from Smugmug to Flickr!

I like it there so far - a week and a half :)

I'm currently using Flickr as well as Pbase. Flickr was recommended by most of the users I communicated with on tipsfromthetopfloor.com (check out the tag 'TFTTF'). At first, Flickr seemed to be the most pointless, 'triumph-of-style-over-substance" thing I had ever encountered. After my initial problems (including log-in woes) were overcome, I now find Flickr to be quite easy to use. 2GB monthly upload limit is most likely more than I'll ever use in the foreseeable future, as I only ever upload downsized images (the option to download images is offered as a link on most photo pages. I may, one day, be a famous-enough photographer not to want this to be a way for someone to get my creations for nothing).

Next year, I plan to do my PAD on Flickr (if I do it at all, that is).

What's the point of Pbase or Flickr if you have DPC? Guess I don't really understand the advantage or benefits of being on another site too? Thanks :)

Capacity, ease of browsing, groups, slideshows, upload utilities, just to name a few...

I find flickr's layout annoying, too much superfluous information. Pbase is very simple and great!
Storage on pBase isnt a problem if you resize files or dont keep the original.

I second what Bood above said. Flikr's layout is really not appealing. I'm not sure if you can customize it - as you seem to be able to do at Pbase. But then again, I am not a user of either. If you have your own website, you can do your own thing. But then again, Pbase or Flikr seem to try and make it easy for you as well as being able to lump you together with other photographers.

I'm with you. Flickr is outstanding. I won't be renewing my Pbase when it expires in 3 months. That should be enough time to move all my stuff over. My Flickr

Mine expires the first part of the year also. If all continues to go well, I'm not renewing either.
