This is a very powerful, and very disturbing image. I found it on a photoblog. The writer of the photoblog did not take the photo, but does credit the photographer and gives the story behind it.
Take a look. Though you might not want to.

That is just so, so, very sad, and very thought provoking.
I think this image will stay with me for a very, very, long time.
A very sad outcome as well here, and just goes to show you, how much a photograph can change the world, in so many differant ways.

so i am not up on my rules but is there a real reason why he left him there? I could never do that and am biting my tongue speaking ill of the dead. the photo is wonderful and disturbing at the same time and tells a story that should be told but the story of afterwards angers me. i am withholding permanent judgment till i can verify the story for myself. sorry for the small rant and thanks for the link. |

Here's a write up with more information about the photographer and what happened. |

I found an article and interview with the photographer a few months ago, this image is sooo fake..
it's a real picture, but if he would have shot the picture in the opposite direction there would have been a
Red Cross tents there with hundreds of people waiting in line for food and medical attention, and just a few meters from the kid was it's mother, so there was no imediate danger do the kid, unless you count famine and dehydration.
in the article there was a picture taken by another photographer with a wide angle lens, that showed all the surroundings.
wish I'd bookmarked the article, but it's online if someone cares to search... |

Just because he could have shot in another direction doesn't make it 'fake' - whatever it is you mean by that strange comment. It's just a photograph - it's you that brings the idea that the world isn't really that terrible to it.

The child may not have been in the immediate danger that this photo may suggest, but he was in dire circumstances all the same. The bird would not have been lurking around like that if all was well in that part of the world.
The fact that Kevin Carter committed suicide is proof of how traumatic a journalist's life can be.

That's a strong and provoking image.
Hunger and famine still exist today in some parts of the world. Help fight it. I have a little yellow banner in my profile page which you can use if you are into these sort of thing. |
