First of all I want to say a huge congrats to tase for getting the red ribbon! Well Done. I was however interested in this this photo in particular as I entered one almost the same in the free study ( last month) and got a rubbish score of 5.5 for what I thought was a great photo. What do you think? Does my shot compare to this ribbon winner?

Just to make it clear, this isn't sour grapes, I just would like an honest comparison :) |

The winning one has to me the rule of thirds and nicer colors

I think a combination of warm tones and off center subject makes the red ribbon winner stand out that little bit more. Yours is beautiful but the light glares seem to distract from the subject.

Rule of thirds is a good rule to follow.
Cranking up the color saturation is a good thing to do on dpc.
The higher scoring shot also has more contrast going, keeping it from looking as flat.
Other than those 3 things, very similiar pictures yes. |

I think they are both about even in terms of quality. I think that subject actually works better centered than using rule of thirds so I disagree with others regarding that. In my opinion, if the ribbon winner was entered in the free study I doubt it would have ribboned. Both are excellent images but one had a very strong connection with the challenge hence why it did well.
ETA: Free studies simply require more wow factor than the typical challenge to get a high score.

Thanks for your responces. I didn't think rule of thirds mattered too much with that particular shot as the focus of the shot is on the pattern of the tail. I did do a few edits with much more contrast and saturation but felt it just looked too fake. I guess thats what is popular on this site, I like a more natural looking photo as far as colours go. Anyway, as I said before, I think the winning shot is great and deserves the ribbon. |

The difference in score has mostly to do with the challenge topic. The sam e photo entered in two different challenges may produce vastly different scores (especially if it DNMC in one of them :)). Free study is a generic challenge, and to do well there the photo has to be generally interesting and pretty to a highest degree (I have never been good at that). In a specific challenge, you may get a lot of extra points for a unique and creative take on it even if the photo per se is less "wow"-some.

Hmmm... I prefer the direction in which the face is looking in your image, but I prefer the darker feather colors in the ribbon winner. I also prefer the more centered image in this case. Apart from those differences, I'd be hard pressed to give one a higher score than the other. So I'd chalk it up to a home-run on the challenge theme.
