i took this about a year ago, on Christmas day. about 25 years ago, doctors didn't believe my uncle would live another 5 years; he figures he's been having about 20 years of last laughs...
about right now, he should be on a helicopter, being airlifted to richmond for emergency neurosurgery. he fell off a ladder a few days ago and suffered what they thought was a slight concussion. even though he thinks differently, his doctors feel his condition is worsening past a point of their being able to help him.
God, be with this gentle man and his family these days.
and if you have a moment, and are so inclined, your prayers and thoughts are most welcomed. |

thanks, ya'll. just a quick update. at the moment, things are in that gray area between "life-threatening" and "critical-but-stable". essentially, he has been bleeding in that area that surrounds the brain, and that is putting pressure on the brain, creating a situation not unlike a minor stroke. the doctors think the fluid might dissipate on it's on, but, if it starts going the wrong way, he's at a hospital that has a neurosurgeon on call.
i think part of the added stress here is that he is one of my dad's last living relatives of their generation, and, at the moment, there's no real way for him to be up here.
may we all have a peaceful night. thanks again for all your thought and prayers. |

last night, things sounded pretty bleak. the third-hand version i got from my dad after he talked to my aunt made it sound like smitty was headed straight to an assisted-care facility, with no hope of ever being able to take care of himself again...
so, i had no idea what to expect when i went to visit him today, other than expecting the worst. i found him in the ICU, resting, until he saw me. he sat right up, took my hand, smiled broadly, and said, "skip, so nice to see you." i knew from the way he squeezed my hand that everything was going to be alright.
the doctor confirmed it, explaining the difference between a stroke and hemmorage. when someone suffers a stroke, the blood flow is cut off to part of the brain, and those brain cells die, making recovery extremely difficult. on the other hand, a hemmorage essentially creates a very aggravating situation where the brain cells are compacted by the fluids that get trapped with nowhere to go. as the fluid dissipates, the brain cells gradually take back their original shape, and usually start to function normally.
uncle smitty has got a ways to go to get all the way back to normal, and the doctors won't officially consider him out of the woods for another couple days. all the same, i'm very, very thankful.
and i'm thankful for all your thoughts and prayers. |

Life. It is indeed a mysterious and delicate thing.
A few years ago, my older sister (2 yrs older than me) had a brain aneurysm, and while have the angioplasty-like surgery, suffered a stroke. It took her a while, and had limited strength in one arm & hand for a while, but she recovered.
I wish your Uncle a speedy recovery. |

Skiprow,
I have sent this to our prayer circle and he now has about 300 people here on the west coast of Florida praying for his swift recovery.
Keep up the positive thoughts

we're not completely out of the woods, yet, but tonight, when the night nurse came in, she asked him if he knew where he was and he replied, "yes...i'm right here."
every day that goes by is better than the last. thanks for all your thoughts, notes, and prayers--they are greatly appreciated!! |

Skip, I'm so glad your Uncle Smitty appears to be recovering. We cherish our time with these older relatives who mean so much to us. Every moment is a special one. Memories of these special times sustain us for years to come.
Here's a big (((hug))) from San Francisco. |
