i took this about a year ago, on Christmas day. about 25 years ago, doctors didn't believe my uncle would live another 5 years; he figures he's been having about 20 years of last laughs...
about right now, he should be on a helicopter, being airlifted to richmond for emergency neurosurgery. he fell off a ladder a few days ago and suffered what they thought was a slight concussion. even though he thinks differently, his doctors think his condition is worsening past a point of their being able to help him. God, be with this gentle man and his family these days.
update: 12/21/06 uncle smitty is home, recovering. he is fine physically and mentally, but still stuggles a bit trying to remember the right words. this is normal, and it takes time, but at least he's still with us, knows us, and can enjoy still being around! thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers, they are greatly appreciated!
update 4/1/07 my uncle smitty passed away yesterday morning. he has had a hellish few months. as it turns out, what caused him to fall off the ladder was the tumor that was growing around his spine. he had been recovering from the fall, but all along complaining about pain in his back, and losing feeling in his legs. when it got bad enough that he couldn't sleep, they took him to the doctor to get him checked out. by then, it was too late. that was only 3 weeks ago...
at least, though, he and my dad were able to spend some time together this winter, including a trip out to las vegas. this is going to be pretty hard on my dad, losing his little brother. your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. |
