It's odd, I've seen a lot of shows that make jokes or have situational comedy about office parties... people sneaking off to have sex, talking smack about the boss, getting drunk, etc. I've been to countless office parties and yet I've never been to one that has had alcohol. Some pretty good cakes but never alcohol. In the back of my mind I guess I considered it an urban legend of sorts.
Anyone work for a company that has alcohol at its parties? |

every year my company has a conference with all members of management (over 2,000) including the CEO and yes there is lots of free alcohol. I never have more than one just to be safe. |

Some companies I've worked for had 'beer Friday's when the CEOs would leave a six pack on everyone's desk. Other places, we all just got drunk at the pub on Friday lunch times.
Xmas parties have always been somewhat silly, drunken affairs at all the companies I've worked for.

I used to work for a major Australian bank. Every Friday we would have "Sundowners"....more like "Sunups" by the time we finished. I remember one staff meeting where we had to discuss how much money the bank would set aside each week in the Petty Cash for Panadol....lmao! Yes...there was lots of alcohol! |

The company I work for has parties at work every Friday. People can actually drink beer at work. They also put on a concert at one point. |

Hubby works for the mines. They do 12 hour shifts (by the time you take in travelling and showers before they leave it is 14 hour shifts). The company puts on Socials a few times a year. These go for the same time period as a normal shift. They start early in the morning...all alcohol supplied at the venue...if they run out they order in more trucks. They have caterers come in with full meals for everyone (usually pigs on spit with all the trimmings and side dishes.) All served up to you. They supply ski boats and parasailing....all water sports and jumping castles for the children. They don't hold back. They supply buses to get you back to town. If it is on the coast it is out fishing all day on boats with (again) everything supplied.
The company we are currently with put on many socials throughout the year also. Their Xmas social is aimed at children....no alcohol...but if you can remember the movie Grease....and their fun park at the end...then you can picture this get together...with enormous marquees for the adults with all the food, soft drinks...pressies, music..everything. Oh and last year a $5000 bonus for each worker. |

For a while in Silicon Valley it seems plying the server/network operations folks with beer was a legitimate way of doing business when you needed something pronto (on or off the clock ;) It was also a great tool to increase attendance headcount during company meetings. |

My last company had Beer & Pretzel Fridays every week and many social events through the year with alcohol at all. The current company isn't quite so lose with the budgets, but they still throw great parties, just not as often. Since I'm 400 miles away from my office now, working remotely, I skip most of the social functions. It just isn't worth the travel for an after hours drink fest.

Damn right!!!!!!! Worked for a communications equipment company once apon a time. Several of the senior female supervisors would get drunk every Christmas at work. However the company didn't supply the booze. Then they'd have a underwear party just outside of the restrooms. Usually only the supervisors in question were drunk, but many women would participate in the party, spilling out, so to speak, on the factory floor after changing in the restrooms. They'd be surrounded by hundreds of other female employees who formed a shield so the male employees couldn't see the action. Did I mention that myself and several other male employees worked in a mezzinine just above this location?
;) ;) :) :)
All was well for a couple of years til one of us guys noticed that one of the "contestants" was a male cross-dresser. Loud peals of laughter issued from the mezzinine and our "hidden" status was revealed. We were forced to make a tactical withdrawal. (We ran for our lives!)
This did take place in the late 70's and many things that are banned or not politically correct at the workplace were an everyday occurance back then. ;)

Pretty much everywhere I worked has had at least one party a year with booze. The most fun was the lottery convention in Vancouver, all expenses paid, partying with the-then CEO. Man, he was a real down-to-earth guy! |

I could tell you stories that would make you cry. I worked for 17 years for a company that had a beer tapper in the company cafeteria. For years there were no rules about consumption during working hours. Interestingly, almost no one ever abused it. The beer tapper was there up until a couple years ago, even though the company has been owned by GE for over a decade.
Through the late '80s at that company, it was really common for both company-sponsored and employee-sponsored parties to take place in the cafeteria. Now you have to know that this was a big cafeteria, with three tiers of seating and a full theatrical stage (lighting, sound the whole shebang) at one end. Dance floor in front of the stage... made for one heck of a party venue.
Now we really didn't need the cafeteria to party in those days... one evening after a long day, I had a few beers with the plant maintenance staff, and three of use decided it would be a good idea to take one of the maintenance guys' moped and race it through the plant. We wound up putting tire tracks four feet up one wall, and eventually bending the hell out of the front rim of the moped. The VP of manufacturing (RIP, Dave) found us in the maintenance shop trying to straighten the wheel. He cracked a beer and pitched in... then he made sure we painted the wall with the tire tracks before we left.
That was in about 1981, and on a visit there in 2003, I was talking with one of their recent hires who was a former co-worker, and he asked "is it true that some fools raced a moped in here one time?"
I've got more office-related drinking stories from that place than I can count. And I (and my liver) are still alive to talk about it! |

Where's yer company spirit, Cindi?? ;-)
I've never been to a company party that didn't serve copious amounts of alcohol. I worked at several software companies where beer fridays was common also.
Since I have my own business, I tried having a company party - went all out on a mini cooler with about a 12 pack of beer - but I got so drunk, I cussed myself out and subsequently fired my ass. Fortunately I didn't remember any of it in the morning, so I'm still here. ;-) |
