Posting this here as I'm getting no response on Q&A

I've been trying to upload a couple of shots I took yesterday, and am being frustrated by the site creating 'medium size' versions of them with atrocious halos and jpeg artefacts everywhere - v annoying.

The three files are respectively 130, 132, and 128 Kb as i've been trying to upload. The site produces mediums of the 128 and 132 K files, but not the 130. I can understand the process being there to make enormous files easily visible - but these are below challenge entry sizes!

Anyone know what's going on, how to avoid it, or what it's for?

Ed

I've happily uploaded files upto 180K without this happening before - and I'm only about up to half my 10Mb space.

Ed, I'm sorry you haven't been getting any responses. I guess I for one don't quite understand your question. I haven't had any shots resized for the portfolio, although I have one photo that was resized for display on DPCPrints that doesn't look good at all. Can you put a link to the uploaded entry in question? Maybe that way, it'll be easier for people to respond to your question ...

You might try re-saving the images (from the "original") just in case the file is corrupt. You might also try putting the JPEG image(s) into a ZIP archive and uploading that, to help protect the image data from corruption in transmission. Make sure your file names don't contain any "funny" characters.

What are the dimensions of the photographs?

Another portfolio question.

I uploaded a set of pictures, and I can see them in my portfolios but others don't appear to be able to.

Is it possible to link people directly to a portfolio set ?

Do I have to do something to make them visible ?

Something odd happening there. You've linked it correctly, and it used to work this way.
If I click on your link I end up in my own portfolio, but with a heading 'wildflowers'.
If I copy-paste the link into the address bar it works!

The site is working just fine in my opinion, never had problem!

Okay, copy-pasting isn't working now (prolly brain-fade on my part), but I've found the problem.

If you post the 'Browse Collection' link from the sidebar when you're in your own portfolio, it is missing the USER_ID portion of the URL.

If you first go into the root of your portfolio using the 'Browse Collection' link and then copy the URL directly from the folder you wish to link, the URL is correct.

So, when you post a link, make sure it has a USER_ID in in somewhere.

Thanks for those responses. The file and image sizes are absolutely normal, as they would be for a challenge shot - max 640 pixel dimensions, and under 150Kb file size. When I look at the image detail page, both a 'medium' and an 'orignal' are visible - and it's the 'medium' (about 20Kb) file that everyone sees.

this shot is an example: the file I uploaded is only 128Kb.

Ed,
I don't know what the problem is, but bumping this thread won't do any harm will it.
I tried uploading a 147kb 640x480, and a 257kb 640x480 and neither of them created a medium file. In fact I didn't even know the site would do that having never uploaded anything above 640x480 before.
Is this happening to you all the time now, or is it just these photos?

All the time - I'm getting paranoid now!!

Actually, I should try re-uploading a shot that hasn't been medium-ed. I'll report back

E

PS. Wouldn't mind if it wasn't for the evil jpeg artefacts all over it

Just seems to be these two pics. i've tried re-sizing and saving them in different jpeg types - seems to make no difference. I think the server just doesn't like them :-)
