Here is my attempt, lots of contrast masking, (maybe 4 or 5 times) diffuse glow faded, Luko USM technique many times faded after I did something new, shadow/highlights a few times, even on the different layers of contrast mapping, gradient maps set to luminosity and a channels mixer where I boosted each channel to 120%.

Seems to do horrible things to skin tones - like really cheap spray on fake tans. Suppose it has its place. Not much like the original images though which have fantastic light. It looks like the lighting is always used a bit 'hot/ over normal exposure' to punch up the contrast with the subject and backgrounds. I expect that's why Bob's sketch then overlay method works - he's creating an edge mask then darkening the edges, which boosts the separation between subject and background in a similar way.

sure they arent like Dave hills. My example wasnt even light with a flash let alone studio lights. See how much detail it brings out. also the orange on the skin tones is easy to coreect. That was a 5min job

Just a little tip, next time if somone hops onto something like that and manuals down (on their back wheel), that's the trick that the photo usually should show, not the hop before they get onto the box.
It's a cool effect though, I downloaded that program and tried it out a while ago but don't have a good enough image to use it on where it improves it.
edit- if it was a 360 or 180 off the box, ignore what I said, but it doesn't look like it to me.

Okay, I don't think this is really looking at all like the stuff Dave Hill was doing, but I certainly had fun playing with it.

seriously, if you haven't listened to me on this yet, swing on over to //strobist.blogspot.com and read the whole dang site. Start on Lighting 101 If you have no lighting skills, you will gain some. If you have lighting skills, you'll make them portable.
Just do it!
I mean, this processing is cool, but the lighting techniques you can use for ANY processing style.

That is some good stuff. I need to read it all, and there is alot there. I don't own a flash yet, and as I read I would like to practice.
Maybe there should be an interview with that guy that made the blog about lighting for the DPC podcast? |

that'd be really interesting. The photojournalist being interviewed. ;-)
There was link to a site that had a whole LOT of used Nikon sb-25's and 28's for like $100 a piece. I REALLY wish I had about $500 bucks right now.

Don't worry, I forsee LOTS of landscape shots in that challenge. HDR is great for that type of photography.

Based off this one? Perhaps ... or that one ... or maybe even this other one. :D
HDR has been a fairly hot topic here for a few months. The discussion picked up pace heavily first in this thread though, iirc.

Hey, I just stumbled upon this thread and saw my name mentioned, very flattered by the way!
I am gonna let the cat outta the bag, as I don't mind sharing secrets .HA! For some reason this filter is one that not many who use like to say they do. But my guess is that it is the Lucis Art Filter that is being used. It has this same dramatic effect.
I use photoshop and Corel Painter IX to get my 'look' but I do sometimes use the Lucis filter and adjust opacity as it can really dirty up an image, depending on the image though, some look great dirty :) It really defines the lines. I also use the high pass filter in PS for a somewhat similar effect. I have a new DVD coming out the end of the month with just photoshop techniques, so if interested ,check my site the end of the month for that one. its not HDR, more like DHP, and I would guess dave hill does some other minor effects as well and the fact that his resolution is prob amazing + his lighting as mentioned before. I threw this together, not the greatest shot but it somewhat demonstrates the effect
