I have a dual processor machine, and my machine almost never gets "tied up", but when I download a file in Firefox 2 (it was true in 1.5 too), the app itself becomes unresponsive during the download, and worse, doesn't even refresh itself (leaving a big white blob). I imagine the refresh problem might be attributable to this awful Dell supplied ATI Fire graphics card, but I don't know why Firefox doesn't just start a background download.

Am I missing a setting, or is a plug-in likely to be the cause of this. I actually don't have too many, except the common, popular ones!

Thanks in advance...

I don't know about downloading in particular, but I've been having trouble with memory leaks from Firefox since I updated to 2.0.

I find in a lot of cases you can't download using Firefox and have to switch to IE. In other cases you can't just click a link you have to right click and use one of the save as options.

I found 1.5 really good but 2.0 seems like a fairly shoddy release.

I guess I forgot the standard advice to avoid any .0 release of anything

I have no problems dl'ing w/firefox.
Some downloads make a blank page appear, but I just close it.
Any download that are big- (over say 500Megs), I usually use a GetRight Download manager. (Right click, copy link location, then paste URL into Getright, getright has segmented downloading so its accelerated and quite a bit faster than just using Firefox, plus you can resume the download if there are any problems--

ok thanks, I think I fixed it.

I had it set to show the download window when a download begins. On my machine, this seems to cause Firefox to go out of commission during the download itself.

Anyone want to try that and see if that happens to you? If it does, I'll report it as a bug.

Thx.

If you are talking about the "check-box" that says show download manager when download begins, that doesnt affect my downloads when clicked
