Although I have been enjoying digital photography for over a year, there are so many things I don't know. I have a high resolution camera, 5 mega pixels. I take my pictures in the highest res. In Paintshop Pro, all the straight lines look jagged. Of course, as I enlarge on the monitor they straighten out. Once printed, this is not a problem, regardless of the size. But when I resize for the challenge, the lines look very jagged. So bad that I had to withdraw one photo from a challenge because it looked so bad once it was on this site. I have both PaintShop Pro and Adobe elements although both are very new to me. I have been using PSP to resize. What, if anything, can I do so that my photos with straight lines look good for the challenge? Any and all advice is very much appreciated, as I am having the same problem this week with my "garbage" photo.

Marsha, I use the same camera you do and the Adobe Photoshop Elements software also. I can quickly show you how to accomplish this. Do you chat on Yahoo/AOL/ICQ? I would be happy to walk you through the process... it's not hard at all :)

No, John, I don't chat! But I could! I guess I would have to download something to be able to do that? If that would make it easier for you to help me, then I'll do whatever it takes, as this is getting to be real problem for me. Thanks so much for your offer to help. Knowing that we have the same camera helps me know that you know exactly what's going on. I want to remind you, though, that Elements is brand new to me.

I use the same setup. I have the same camera, and generally use PSP to prepare my challenge entries, though sometimes I use the GIMP. You can look at my past entries to see if you can spot the same problem in my photos. When you resize in PSP be sure to use the "Smart Size" option or either the bilinear or bicubic options. Jagged lines are the result of aliasing. Using the "Smart Size" option when resizing does a process called anti-aliasing, which gives edges a softer look. |

in that case, before we try this, try JK's suggestion of the 'smart resize' option in PSP to see if that alleviates your problem. i can tell you for sure that you should have NO trouble getting crystal clear resized images from your camera :)
