After voting in a few challenges here lately I felt I had done my part, so I let my wife vote my election ballot. She's easily amused.

If you are in favor of capitol punishment, you are probably conservative. :)

Killing politicians isn't punishment--it's a kindness. I suppose we could try to rehabilitate them, but then we'd have to raise taxes, and to do that you need a politician. It's one of those catch 22 things. :D

So you voted for nobody?

Good Point! But there were some Libertarians, Constituitonalist's, etc. that I did not see any ads, etc for. So I looked into what there stances were.
I wanted to do what my old roommate use to do to one of our friends, EVERY election (especially President) wrote in his name. My friend probably has an FBI file on him (since 1985), hehehehehe

All joking aside, and there does seem to be some of it, which is why I haven't moved it to rant, there is something really bothering about some of your posts.

I've seen a couple of allusions to Hitler, etc. That disturbs me greatly. Whether you are Republican, Democrat, Independent, Green, or Pink-Polka Dotted Rock Lovers, we are all American (well, those of in this thread that are American). Whether you like Bush and such or think he and his are the Anti-Christ is irrelevant to me.

To compare our government to one that systematically murdered hundreds of thousands/millions of Jews, Christians, Homosexuals, and anyone else they didn't like is just wrong. At the very minimum, it makes a mockery of those that died at the hands of the Nazis, and those that survived to be haunted by it.

That, to me, is just wrong. Whether you like our politics or not, there is a lot right and good in our country. If you don't believe it, you either don't want to, or you have never seen the conditions other countries live in. It's NOT perfect, and there is a lot that needs to be fixed. Such is the case everywhere, I believe. Unlike many other countries, though, we have the power, still, to do something about it.

Maybe I'm an idealist and still naive, but I do believe the people have the power to change things.

I only did it because the parallels are real. The people who spoke up when the Nazi party rose to power are not thought to be in bad taste today. I am speaking up because I believe the country I love is under attack.

The results are coming in and my knuckles are white.

To CalliopeKel, yes, some of what I said was bunk and the result of a visceral fear and disgust I am feeling. Sorry for that, as I said. But let me clarify my last statement. When I said Republicans are under the sway of the neocons, I am talking specifically about the elected leaders in Congress, nobody else. I did not mean it as a generalization. It should make sense in the context of the paragraph as a whole. But if you think the loss of due process and the authorization to torture do not threaten the Constitution, then my argument is indeed bunk to you.

And I don't disagree. What we would probably disagree on is who and what exactly is be attacked.

I still think it in poor taste to compare our government to Nazi Germany.

But, that is a point I will not argue about simply because this thread has remained civil, and I would like it to stay as such. Also, I am well aware that no argument I could present is going to sway you or anyone else to change your mind. We just have to agree to disagree and vote what our conscience tells us.

It's not wrong to compare -- what you don't like is whether it's a positive or negative comparison. If I say "The US is a far better country than Nazi Germany" I am still making a comparison.

This is one of those places where the ideologues try to demonize and subvert the language. I think what you mean to say is "Don't liken the US to Nazi Germany ..."

Then you don't understand the fascist ideology. You should bone up on your Political Science 101 before throwing those types of statements around.

All this has been going on for some time ...

perhaps. but "compare" may still be an accurate word. To "compare" something has the connotation of looking at similarities between two things. "Contrasting" looks at the differences.

Whichever way you want me to say it, my meaning is "I don't think it is a fair or accurate description to say our current government is the Fourth Reich."

Now, shall we dance with "must" and "should?" ;)

I am actually comparing the U.S. to pre-Nazi Germany, the period when the Nazis were still rising to power. We can debate the accuracy of the comparison, but there's nothing "unfair" about it. Fairness has to do with methodolgy, not ideas.

and, oh my God, Democrats are projected to win the House by CNN. thank God. I really didn't think it could happen... they still have a shot at the Senate...

Congratulations on your contribution to the Fourth Reich. Your shopwindow will (probably) be spared.

Sorry if I misunderstood. This is the quote by you that I was referring to.

Your post several posts later kinda indicates the rise to power, but I am inferring that based on your latest post.

Yeah, sorry about that. And Kel's such a nice person, too. I sent her a personal apology for that.
