I spent 3 days this week in seminars on photography. They are open to anyone that joins the organization, but generally it's for working pros in the wedding and portraiture field.
Speakers included folks in the biz for 10 to 30 years, some with their PPA master certificates, published in books, etc - meaning, not local talent but photographers flown in from across the nation.
Folks asked all sorts of questions, and every speaker encouraged this, usually with the admonition 'There are no dumb questions'.
Well, Yes Virginia, there are dumb questions. This one was asked of more than one speaker by more than one person...
"What's your favorite F stop?"

<---- confused
I don't understand why that's a stupid question. Maybe some people prefer a certain setting for whatever reason in specific situations...or then again, maybe I'm just dense. |

The question (as phrased) can not be answered without qualifications. Many variables affect aperture (lighting, motion, lens, focal length, camera, ISO sensitivity, handheld or mono/tripod, ...the list goes on.

The members of the f/64 Group (Adams, Weston, Cunnungham, et al.) didn't have a problem expressing a preference ... |

Hmmm, So it was a meeting for working pros in the wedding and portraiture field? I could see myself asking that same question, I don't see it as stupid or dumb. Its like asking whats your favorite lens is... |

Do you drive a stick shift car? If so, what's your favorte gear? - Depends on the conditions of the moment and you use them all at some point.
If you have a studio with multiple photogs shooting, say, HS seniors in teh studio and outside and want to have a consistent product from photog to photog then you as owner will probably set some parameters to get consistency.
Just ask yourself - what's your favorite f-stop?
Depends...70-200 2.8 lens, outside portraits or 18-50 2.8 lens with flash at a wedding reception or 24-135 3.5-5.6 and landscapes or 100 2.8 macro lens shooting an ant...each lens and subject is different. Just like I have particular lens for a particular subject, so it may be with f-stops of shutter speeds.

I don't see it as a stupid question either. I have an overall favorite f-stop and don't believe there is anything as a stupid question unless you ask the same question just answered. ;-)

Ok, let's move on. What's your favorite shutter speed? :) |

the question may not have been so vague if the person had stated the situation in which the F-stop would be used, I suppose. |

I still don't think it is a stupid question and still believe that the only stupid question is the one not asked.

It makes sense if asked of a forum of wedding/portrait photographers -- perhaps they should have asked if they preferred to shoot those events with a shallow or deep DOF ... |

I don't think it's a stupid question but it surely is a worthless one. Might as well asked what their favorite color is. Why take up their time when better questions can be asked? |

This is what makes it...ok, maybe not stupid, but most definitely a silly question. These people are pros, or at least people that should have an already firm grasp on basic photography. For someone just picking a camera, no, it's not a stupid question, but in the context of a room full of pros, I'd say it's a pretty silly question. |

I'm sure Ken Rockwell would have stated what the best f-stop was and state facts as to why it is the only choice...
