Comment by KarenNfld:
What a great find! Did you adjust the colours?
thanks for the comment. yes I altered the colors. I desaturated the whole thing then brought back some of the greens in the ground then used a filter to give the leaf its color and masked off the rest of the shot. |

Good job. Red really suits the leaf, makes us see the heart more.

from ursula :
Out of curiosity, do you use the flash often when working outside? I have never done that. Way back when my flash went off outside by mistake, but I have never used one on purpose outside. Is it hard?
no, not hard, really... just takes a few adjustments. i do take the flash outside to do macros. don't always use it, but the shot in question it was very overcast and i didn't want to bump up the iso. i just dialed the flash down and pointed it up and away. i really should have had the lightsphere on, but it worked out...
when taking shots in hard sunlight, the flash is also great for filling in detail on the shadow side... just keep watching the histogram and adjusting until there's no spike on the far right... ;)
took some shots while i was working out in the garage... day 11 will be out shortly...

Thank you.
Have you (or anyone here) ever tried one of those ringflashes that supposedly work so well for macros? I am tempted to ask for one for my birthday or Christmas. Anyone know about them? |

I have been wanting a ring flash for a while. i also want the mp-e 65mm which can do 5:1 if i get these things my macro work will go through the roof (he gently hints hoping his wife reads this, that means you jaded LOL)
i use my flash with the lightsphere for most of my macro work. all except for todays so far in this challenge. for the ones with a black background that is because of the flash. i haven't removed anything from those. if you take a shot in the evening and have a fair distance behind your subject then the flash will light the subject but everything else will be black or very dark and easy to darken. |

I have no idea what day I'm on, or what day it's supposed to be (or what day it really is for that matter). |

This macro challenge has screwed me up. Everywhere I go, I look at every little spec of dust, waterdrop, fallen leaf, tiny bug, piece of rust, food scrap - EVERY FREAKIN TINY THING - framing it in my mind - would this make a cool shot? How about that? I look like a freak walking the short distance from my office through the back yard to the house with my head bobbing around looking at everything like I'm on LSD or something.
Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now. Gotta run, I think I see some interesting cookie crumbs nestled on the Caps Lock key... |
