I should hope that a topic, religion included, would go beyond a mere 'sharing of ideas' and perhaps even 'sprawl' to the extent of giving us delight and stimulating awareness (see also Wm. C. Williams: "No ideas but in things").

I think this challenge could prove to be very interesting and enlightening. Why not investigate a religion you don't know much about and submit a photo about that... or look at religions based on views from the middle ages or even choose a non-mainstream religion.
There's a whole lot that could be accomplished here, maybe even increase the tolerance of our differences.
That's my two cents. Now you can pick it apart.

I looked at the comments for your 7 deadly entry and I'm not sure what mean... 2, maybe 3 people said they were offended by the content. That is a FAR cry from most... Is it my math that is faulty here?

All right, i have thought about it and change my tune. Still believe a religion challenge isn't a great idea, but if there is one i'll try to submit, either my view or *a* view of religion. I also believe being capable of objectively evaluate submissions. For any picture that is technically/artistically of interest but its meaning is unclear to me, i'll invite the submitter, in my comment, to PM clarifications to me.
If there is such a challenge, it might be helpful if the Admins advise that submissions may not necessarily represent the view of the submitter and to urge voters to respect ALL points of view.
Fair enough?

I keep thinking about this and I know some think that a lot of the cliche photos would be thrown out in this challenge, I beg to differ. I can think of bible verses that would allow for photos of pets, flowers and children. As a matter of fact that might even be how I approach it the more I think about this as a challenge. Actually I don't want to see this as a challenge cause I can see the potential for a lot of hurt feelings and a lot of troll like comments, but to be on the safe side I am going to go the cliche route if it happens. |

This whole thread has an interesting tone to it.
I'm not what most would call traditionally religious, but it seems to me the proper response to a "hurtful" comment would be to pity the commenter and "pray" for their salvation and enlightenment, not to become defensive and angry or doubt my own interpretation...
There are already general site rules regarding "offensive" images which seem to work pretty well. If you believe an image violates those rules, request a DQ. If it moves you, positively or negatively, but is within the site rules, then I'd say it was an effective photograph... |

After pouring through all the responses, I still feel religion would be a good challenge suggestion, not as a form of holding one religion over another, but for revealing the divinity in us all.

But aren't there any devil worshipers here?? I'm really curious to see what they would submit.

That's what I keep wondering, too. Those are the ones who would be extremely offended by what the majority view as the norm for religion. The rest of us could be offended by what they show for religion, and yet in another challenge the same thing could be looked at entirely differently.
I still feel this doesn't belong here as a challenge and could cause a lot of problems. I believe there could be a safe way to approach the subject but to say religion itself could be a nightmare of hypocritical issues. I keep trying to think of a safer way it could be approached and maybe Spiritual Fulfillment would be a broader approach to it. |
