I would like to see an extra score calculation on the final results of my challenge photos that shows an average of the scores I received from the 'favorite photographers' that I have selected.

I think this would be a useful number to me since my favorite photographers are selected based on my opinion of their work...

The only problem I see with this is could could easly breach the anonymity of the voting process by picking only one Favorite at a time...maybe if there was a restriction on the minimum number assigned would work though.

Sounds reasonable... maybe require a minimum of 10 favorite photographers...

Maybe even five would be enough...I like the idea of knowing how a group of people feel about a photo.

For the really daring, there could be a "release my vote" option on the preferences page where one could choose to let their vote be non-anonymous after the voting is completed, saving them the trouble of typing it in the comment field.

There's no way to keep the anonymity this way. If I select 4 people who have never voted, I can pick one at a time and still tell you what each of you gave me just by adding then removing you from my faves list.

Well maybe it could be triggered by the number of votes, not the number of voters in the pool. Your favorites might not vote on your photo in any given challenge anyway, but if N of your favorites do, it could trigger display of the average and/or distribution of those votes.

I'd rather make it opt-in on the part of the voters, to allow their vote to be disclosed after the challenge is completed.

That's interesting; just this morning i was considering the idea of bringing up one of my pet peeves: Open Voting. Here the suggestion is restricted to votes by favorite photographers.

This is my main argument in favor of open voting: FEEDBACK. A score really doesn't tell all that much. Contradictory comments may not be all that helpful. Some people don't have time for comments.

This feedback is particularly important for anyone trying hard to improve and for anyone seeking his own voice or making some risks. The latter may end up with low scores because their idea didn't go over too well by the mainstream of dpc voters. Now, if that person were to see that the scores from the people whom he respects steadily increase or are consistent, that tells him that he's on the right track and reinforces to continue with what he's doing.

With every challenge i make a couple of mistakes, some pictures i overrate and some i miss. But i vote honestly and presume other people do likewise. So, why is it such a big deal to keep voting anonymous? Sure, some energetic searcher may discover that certain people always give one another 10s. Big deal.

I remember the lengthy thread about making the comments public while voting is going on. The fear was that people would try to influence a commenter to up his score by sending a PM. That hasn't happened, has it?
With Open Voting i don't foresee a big problem of PMs floating around that say "Hey, how dare YOU give me a 4?" We are all grown-ups, aren't we (even the <16 yrs have shown themselves to be quite mature).

I would love to see this happen. I see some advantages to me being able to choose which votes I see, and some to the voter being able to decide if his/her vote is released or not. I personally would have no problem releasing my vote all the time - I tend to vote with the majority on the higher-rated shots, and a little higher than average on the lower-rated shots anyway.

Anyway, my point is that if I could choose a handfull of my favorite photographers here, I could track my performance a little better. The comments to help me know what I need to be doing, the votes to help me know if I'm doing it.

that would be A Good Thing.

however, it should only be for information purposes as it would be all too easy to put a friend on that list and have them give you 10's.....
