What if it's against your religion to take photos of religious items?

um.. then don't participate ? :)

I'm a Roman Catholic; non practising. Most of our objects are boring, but some other Religions like Buddhism and Hinduism have pretty funky stuff. However, I'd have a hard time finding any of those in small town Eastern Canada where I live.

Wait a minute. Is beer still considered a religion? I think it was when I went to college. Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddism, and Beer. Lots of that around here.

i think we should all do a picture of something and call it "..Zen"

;D

This is such a touchy subject that I think maybe the subject should be very loosely defined allowing photos of places of worship as well as artifacts and idol type things.

I really don't think this is actually that good of an idea cause there is such a diversified group here, and what a Christian would photograph would might be offensive to a Buddist and vice versa.

There are two things that should not be discussed in the workplace...RELIGION and POLITICS, and even though this is not a work place I have learned that it follows through here. Religion doesn't belong somewhere where the opinions differ as much as they do here.

I disagree...
Due to the fact that such a diversified group participates here, I think we would get a wide range of interesting photos, from all over the world.
To say a buddist would be offended by a Christian entry is kind of silly. Taking a photo and submitting it to a contest is not offensive. Trying to convince someone to switch religions would stir up some feelings, but that is not the point of the contest.

But... there are people who will create controversy where it doesn't exist when the topics are religion or politics. To those people, I would say don't participate in this particular challenge and save your self inflicted controversy for the rant forum.

You are forgetting one thing there are religions that practice animal sacrifice, how do you think most people would feel seeing a rabbit on an alter bleeding everywhere? Or what about the voo doo rituals involving chickens and such, when you say religion that is what could develop in the challenge.

We don't have to go to the extremes! You are saying we can't have photojurnalism because someone will post mass murder photo!
Or no Yellow challenge because someone will take shot of an bathroom stool!

Actually what I am saying is because of the diversification of those on this site, anything is possible. I personally know exactly what I would take for my photo for religion. My point is no two people would have the same exact idea of what religion is, and many people could get offended because of the challenge.

I agree with you, Anna, but I don't believe that consequently avoiding such confrontations would be a part of the solution. I'm still living in the hope (I know, I'm a naïve kid:o)) that for most people religion means peace and tolerance towards each other, whatever you believe. But I also realize that for many, it's not.
My opinion: religion would be a very inspirative challenge,I think. It's worth the 'risk' of offending one or two people

Maybe a safer approach to this would be peace and tolerance for the challenge.

Not sure how I'd capture bigotry and hatred in a single shot.

Maybe a Rangers vs Celtic footy match would encompass it quite well...

If magnetic999 takes a photo and call it Zen, i guess i'll have to sneak my way into a local KKK rally and take photos of hooded guys with burning crosses and call it Christian Men Meditation :)

Now that is what could be very offensive.

Religion is a very touchy subject, Im not a very religious person (only go to church for weddings and funerals, and usually only pray on airplanes...lol), but I am very interested in learning about religions and their ways. I may not like , or agree with, many of the religions and their beliefs, but that does not stop me from asking questions and learning about it or being curious about it.

If others felt that way this challenge would do very well and turn out some very interesting pictures.

I don't think we should shy away from "touchy subjects", I agree with James, it would be fun to see diverse people's take on the subject. We should celebrate our diversity and differences and this may be one way to do that. I highly doubt there would be any extremely offensive photos, most people here are careful about what they post.

If that is the case are you also saying we should do a political challenge at the moment or something patroitic? Those are both very touchy subjects at the moment. I learned that the other week during the weather challenge when my submission was mistakenly taken for a political viewpoint rather than showing the wind.

The hard part is getting more people to open their minds to subjects that dont agree with and not score it a 1 and leave a bad/harsh comment becuse they disagree with the contents of the photo.

But I do agree that the rules of image content should still apply to all images

Perhaps, for those of you who would find photos "offensive", that others find "sacred"; need to consider why you find it so. Finding subjects and topics of interest is always difficult for me (and why I like dp, it gives topics and stretches my 'sight'), and this one would certainly prove to be of interest and perhaps help me to 'see' something I haven't before, both about myself and others.
