hello everyone,
here's the available equipment i have to work with (other than camera):
alienbees flash unit w/ umbrella,
Sigma EF-500 DG Super flash unit
1 42inch 5-in-one reflector (black/white/silver/gold/translucent)
ordered a photex 12' support system and a Muslin grey/marble background.
now, the setup. i've heard that the keylight (alienbee) needs to be right above eye level, and just barely off center of the face. is this true? considering what i have...is there anyone that could give me some advice as to how i should set this up? my flash unit(sigma) is slave capable, so i can fire it into the reflector if need be. i'm just curious as to what the best setup for a studio headshot for let's say, actors, would be.
thanks so much in advance for the advice, you all are greatly appreciated.
i'll post results as i get them. thanks so much.

The best actors headshots I've seen are done with a garage that faces the right way and a large sheet of cardboard. Add in a chair and a tripod and you've got all the lighting you need.
Examples are here
For a video showing him shooting, check out the Discovery channel documentary here
Keep it simple. Worry about the subject more than the techniques and apparatus. Get good expressions, capture them well.
