I'd really like to do this up well, but my post-editing skills are poor at best.

Could anyone suggest how to approach this?

Detailed Photoshop steps would be great, too, if you have the time/inclination to include them.

Thanks a bunch.

That's really cool.

Thanks a lot for the details, too.

It just makes me realize how much I have to learn about post-processing.

Thanks again, jaded_youth!

Great job Crystal!

It might be good to burn the log down just a bit as well. It's light colored, which attracts attention, and the texture is pretty interesting with the increase in the contrast.

My attempt at it

editing is similar to Crystal, but I made the colors darker
- burn the log
- levels in soft light
- channel mixer layer to convert to b/w
- copy background on top in 'color' mode
- another levels for final touch
- sharpen

Beautiful job. I like how you made the background less prominent but didnt have to blur it like i did. VERY nice.

These are great. It's tough to choose between them.

I'll take a run at it and post what I come up with.

Thanks for all the help.

My version is a little dark too. Not always a good thing for kid portraits but I think the texture and color in the trunk and hair just screams out for it.

I used multiple curve adjustments with masks, color balance and sat for tonal changes, esp to the skin, faded gaussian blur layer, and some minor touchups.
