Discount any significance to the actual numeric score your images receive.

DPC voters frequently heap high praise on the photographs they see, but it does NOT translate into even remotely decent scores. Why that happens is a complete mystery especially considering that yoters do generally rate images in correct order from best to worst. The site defines 10 as "good" but judging by scores alone, DPC voters as a group, do not feel images are very good.

A long while back I DQed myself. Did a portrait of a young lady processed on a uncalibrated monitor, it really sucked. I didn't want her see how bad it was. Just remember if you get DQed in the next 25 challenges, your out for awhile....

Appears from the amount of views that voters love to hate it. :-(

My leading lines entry sat on 4.8-4.9 all week. After rollover it hit 5. I loved my entry and was at a loss why people couldn't see the leading lines from the bottom corners. But I left it there and I don't have a DQ on my list because of it.

Stay there Leroy.

That's right. You can only request a self-DQ if there is no rules violation and you haven't had another DQ for at least 25 challenge entries.

I guess people just hate the color purple. I did not enter this one, though I almost did with my zoomed purple morning glory shot. It was totally abstract, but I deleted it at the last minute. Glad I did. Shot isn't in portfolio, so don't even bother looking.

You get grounded for a week. Big deal.

Hmmm....Big deal. Well if didn't dq myself, calibrated my monitor, I would had missed out on $150 worth of sold prints and several referrals. Yep, life is good here, but its not my whole life...lol

edit; just had to add, if it wasn't for this site. I wouldn't have been able to do that and in the last several months selling sports shots to parents, senior portraits, booked a couple of events in October, I owe this site a ton! ....A big Thank You to DPC!

You know, to argue the other side Leroy...self DQ's are there for a reason. If you don't want to deal with it, then DQ the shot. Who cares? You have to watch yourself so as not to get a DQ in the next 25, but after your wrench fiasco, we know you are super careful. :)

It doesn't show up on your profile and would have been anonymous (had you not started this thread...).

It's there for a reason, there is no shame in using it.

Dude you are a very wise man. You see the glass half full & half empty. We need to meet up sometime.....Joe

I feel EXACTLY the same way, but I already did a self DQ a few weeks ago.

I guess by now you get the idea, Leroy; we all take our lumps from the voters. Sometimes it is because we enter a mediocre shot and sometimes it is because the voters just don't like it. Hang in there, you might need tha DQ someday soon!

I submitted the request to have it DQ'd. Now, since there is no need to stay anonymous, the reason isn't as much about my average as it is about the model. I really didn't want her to stumble across her photo and see that it had failed miserably.

well said. i've used it once, myself. i so utterly misunderstood the challege that my image bombed. add to that, it wasn't a great photo to begin with and you had a sub 4 score in day 3. i got a request for validation, submitted it w/ a note asking SC to end the pain. it's gone. no more reminders of my stupidity...

other than all the other photos and posts, that is...

Well, her photo didn't fail miserably. It just didn't get high votes, but that's a different story.

I've only received one 6+. And it was a great entry. I even had hopes for a ribbon. That after spend 8 back-breaking hours on my shot.

In the end, I missed the top 10 by one spot and didn't even get a star as I placed 11th.

I've got an entry in the current Free Study that I am really hoping to be my second 6+. In truth, it'll probably get squashed. I am sure it will replaced one of my current "five top challenges". And if it comes below 5.0 I will likely put my camera equipment up for sale.

*lol*

There is a slight chance it might appeal enough to even rank or ribbon if entered in an appropriate challenge. However, it being a free study, there will likely be a great number of higher scoring shots.

Such is life...

So if there is a rules violation you can't request a self-DQ?

You can request it, but it will be treated as a "regular" DQ.

The main difference is that a self-DQ is the equivalent of withdrawing the entry, and the image doesn't appear any longer in the usual places. A "regular" DQ will still be listed at the end of the challenge results; a self-DQ will not.

I wish my score was doing better, I spent about 3 hours setting up the shot and at least an hour afterwards to clean everything up.
getting some good comments but the votes are slim and grim.

I am going to shake it off because I have a very nice shot entered in the sept free study should do better than the past few photos I have entered. I think it is one of the best photos I have ever taken and the subject is very appealing. Could score my personal best with this one. Then again it could BOMB!
